The Colfax Messenger highlighted the negative facts and fears brought out by Bill Yingst at the October 25 school board meeting, regarding affects of the pandemic in our school this year; but the Messenger failed to highlight the positive facts as well. Last year at this time, the Colfax school district faced the exact same struggle with quarantines and shortages in staffing as we are this year – but last year we had mandatory masking, social distancing and sanitizing efforts. This year our district has optional masking, slightly lax focus on social distancing and Mr. Yingst made mention of possibly taking down partitions and dividers in the near future that are being used throughout the school. Our district is obviously not facing pandemic affects to the same extent as we were last year, or the lack of mitigation efforts would have shut us down completely by now. The Messenger needs to investigate a bit further and bring a more balanced approach to reporting on stories like this. Otherwise it just seems that you are promoting a narrative….and one that isn’t very popular right now.
Thank you,
Denise Solberg
