I notice in this month’s Spotlight bulletin included with our Dunn Energy Cooperative electric bills that our rates will likely be increased soon. James Hathaway, DEC’s general manager, wrote that the “board of directors discussed electric rates with the co-op’s management staff at the June board meeting. Options for changing rates were discussed.” He concluded that “a final decision on this year’s electric rate increase will be made at the July board meeting.”
Would it not have been instructive, for those of us member/owners of the co-op interested in rate issues, to know what those “options” are? And would it not be instructive to witness the board discussion at the July meeting as it leads to a final decision?
Alas, as of the April board meeting, the board voted unanimously to bar all 9,000 member/owners from attending board meetings simply to observe. You read that right. We are not welcome at the co-op we own except to pay our bills. Perhaps at 9:00 a.m. on July 29 at DEC offices, some co-op member/owners interested in their electric rates might do well to challenge that anti-democratic prohibition by showing up to attend the board meeting.
