After reading the front-page article, “It Only Takes Two Seconds”, I want to share my experience of about 30 years ago. I was driving to work from Cold Spring, MN to St. Cloud, MN on extremely slippery roads. I hit an icy spot and my car spun around in a circle, continued sliding sideways, hit the edge of the road, and rolled completely over and back onto it’s wheels. When the car went out of control, I heard and felt the seat-belt engage. When it settled I was shaken up and almost passed out, but basically unhurt. The roof of the car was squashed down enough to brush against my hair.
A highway patrolman stopped and called a wrecker and came to sit with me to wait for it. While we waited, he told me he had been with the highway patrol for a long time. He had approached many rollovers with the driver sitting in the seat, looking normal but dead from a broken neck. The two seconds it took to fasten the seat-belt probably saved my life.
When I hear about accident fatalities where seat-belts were not used, I think about my accident and I wish I could scream to the whole world, “PLEASE USE SEAT-BELTS”.
