In the present political climate that we live in, most of us are acutely aware of the potential pitfalls of spreading misinformation, intentional or otherwise.
A couple of weeks ago, the residents of the town of Forest received a mailing from a former town board member. In this letter, the author stated that he had looked at his property tax statement and asked “Wonder why the state and county went down and the town taxes went up?”
These are the facts:
1. The state of Wisconsin does not participate in property taxes.
2. St. Croix County and town of Forest taxes went down, albeit very little.
3. Local school district and local technical school taxes went up a combined 12%.
Whoever does not understand their property tax statement should ask for assistance prior to spending the time, effort, and postage as was done in this instance.
Questioning how a municipality spend it’s tax dollars is, has, and always will be fair game. Passing off fiction as fact, is not!
