The Glenwood City softball team came away with a split last week.
After building an early advantage against Turtle Lake/Clayton in a non-conference game played at home last Tuesday, the Hilltoppers hung on to claim victory in a wild and high-scoring affair, 16-14.
Two days later in Elk Mound, Glenwood City had difficulty scoring runs as it lost a conference contest to the Mounders, 12-2, in six innings.
With the split, Glenwood City enters the third week of competition with 1-2 overall record.
The Toppers will play a pair of Dunn-St. Croix opponents this week. They went on the road to Spring Valley Monday and will return home to face rival Boyceville on Thursday. Colfax will be in town next Tuesday, April 22.
Turtle Lake/Clayton
Glenwood City scored eight runs in the first inning and appeared well on its way to an easy victory over visiting Turtle Lake/Clayton last Tuesday, April 8.
But, Turtle Lake/Clayton did not roll over. The Lady Titans scored five runs over the next two innings to pull within three runs.
Then, in the bottom of the third, the Hilltoppers plated another six runs to take a 14-5 lead and then added another score in their half of the fourth for a 10-run lead.
Just when Glenwood City was poised to end the contest early, Turtle Lake/Clayton came up with three runs to stave off the ten-run rule and the contest continued.
Over the next two innings, the Titans plated six more runs to pull within two scores of the Toppers at 16-14 before Glenwood City was finally able to end the game and hold on for its first victory of the season.
Both teams finished with 15 hits while seven Hilltopper errors helped the Titans nearly pull off the comeback.
Emma Bliese, Brooklynn Brite and Jenna McCarthy led the Hilltoppers with three hits each with two of Brite’s going for doubles. Bliese and Brite also scored three runs while McCarthy finished with five RBIs in the game. Morgan Blaser added a pair of hits, had two RBIs and scored twice. Isabel Davis, Kiley Leduc, Tori Ohman and Haylee Deiss also had two RBIs each.
Glenwood City also had six stolen bases with Ohman and Bliese recording a pair.
Despite surrendering all 15 Titan hits and their 14 runs, Kirah Krueger finished with the pitching win. She struck out half a dozen and walked two.
Elk Mound
Glenwood City trailed host Elk Mound just 3-1 after four innings of play in the pair’s Dunn-St. Croix softball contest played last Thursday, April 10.
The Mounders bats, however, came alive leading to four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth and a 12-2 Elk Mound win.
Glenwood City was outhit 15 to six by Elk Mound. The Toppers also committed four errors.
Glenwood City’s scores came on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Trailing just 2-0, Glenwood City closed the gap to a single run in the fourth when Tori Ohman reached base with two outs after being hit by a pitch. Ohman eventually scored on a single by Morgan Blaser.
After Elk Mound made it a 2-score game with a run in its half of the fourth, the Hilltoppers again made it a one-run contest in the top of the fifth. Brooklynn Brite doubled with two outs and then scored on a base hit by Kiley Leduc.
The Mounders, however, scored nine times over the next two innings for the 10-run win.
Jenna McCarthy and Leduc finished with two hits each for the Toppers.
Kirah Krueger suffered the pitching loss as she gave up all 12 Mounder runs on 15 hits and walked four.
