Glenwood City baseball team loses lead and then game to Elk Mound

ELK MOUND — In its only contest of the week, the Glenwood City baseball team lost an early lead and eventually the game when it visited Elk Mound for a conference contest last Thursday, April 10.
Glenwood City put three runs on the board against the defending Dunn-St. Croix champs in its very first at-bat.
Caleb Klinger drew a one-out walk and stole second base, Blake Fayerweather followed with a double to deep center field that brought Klinger to home plate with the games first run. Fayerweather went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. After Brody Riba grounded out, Andrew Blaser drew a walk, took second on the steal and put the Toppers’ third run on the score board when Elk Mound committed back-to-back errors.
Glenwood City added another run in its half of the second. With one out, Corey Strong reached base on an error, went to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on Klinger’s base hit and scored on another passed ball to give the Toppers a 4-0 advantage.
Elk Mound finally got on the board with a pair of scores in the bottom half of second and then added four runs in its half of the third to take a 6-4 lead.
Elk Mound didn’t relinquish that advantage.
The Mounders blew open the contest with 11 runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth and went on to claim the 17-4 win in five innings.
Jake Wood, Caleb Klinger, and Fayerweather accounted for the Toppers three hits.
Blake Fayerweather took the pitching loss for Glenwood City. He went three innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on two hits, striking out three and walking two. Jacob Hager tossed two-thirds of inning where he surrendered 11 runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out one. Mitchel Main threw a third of an inning in which he did not allow a hit or run.
Victor Noller earned the win for Elk Mound. The starting pitcher gave up three hits and four runs (two earned) over four innings, striking out five and walking four.
Elk Mound tallied nine hits in the game.
Glenwood City (0-2) was in Spring Valley Monday and returns home to host Boyceville this Thursday, April 17, Mondovi next Monday, April 21 and finally Colfax on Tuesday, April 22.
