HAMMOND — Despite being no hit by a quartet of St. Croix Central pitchers, Glenwood City did manage to score a run in its 2025 baseball opener played under cold and blustery conditions last Saturday afternoon, April 5 on Central’s home diamond.
But, that one run was not enough against the defending Middle Border Conference champion Panthers who scored a 9-1 victory against the visiting Hilltoppers.
The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when St. Croix Central scored four runs. The Panthers plated five more runs in the sixth inning to up their advantage to 9-0.
Glenwood City avoided the shutout when it scored a run in its final at-bat. Senior Andrew Blaser led off the Toppers’ seventh inning with a walk, he then stole second, took third on a strike out by Langston Walz and finally came home to score on a passed ball.
Glenwood City used four pitchers in the game against Central who finished with seven hits. The Toppers also committed a pair of fielding errors.
Senior Blake Fayerweather started on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings, allowed just one hit and struck out a pair.
Mitchel Main then came on for an inning and a third. Although Mitchel Main did not allow a hit, the three walks he gave up allowed SCC to score a pair of runs which eventually lead to the Topper junior taking the mound loss.
Jack Main tossed an inning and two thirds and Jacob Hagar threw an inning. Jack Main allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three while Hager gave up three hits and five runs and had a trio of walks with a K.
Glenwood City had trouble getting its offense in gear throughout the contest as it struck out 18 times against St. Croix Central pitching. Ponath picked up the pitching win for the Panthers as he struck out eight GC batters and did not allow a hit or run in his three innings on the mound.
The Hilltoppers only game this week is this Thursday’s conference opener at Elk Mound. Next Monday, Glenwood City will play in Spring Valley.
