GLENWOOD CITY — Head track and field coach Tom Klatt suspects this year’s Hilltopper teams will be strong in boys’ middle distance races and in pole vault and throwing events for the girls’ team. But the main goals for the season are to have fun, stay healthy and reach goals.
“Our goal this season is to have fun, keep everyone healthy and reach personal and team goals with success at the end of the season. With 39 total athletes, it will be an exciting year with lots of opportunities for athletes to achieve their personal and team goals,” said Klatt.
Klatt said the boys’ team has a lot of big shoes to fill from last year, since a number of seniors graduated. The boys’ team will miss Tucker Augesen on shot put and discus, Conner Gross on shot put, discus and 100 m, Logan Rands in high jump and relays and Will Standaert in pole vault. The 2024 boys’ team finished third at the conference meet.
The girls’ team lost three very talented athletes to graduation. They are: Haylie Hannah a two-time state medalist in the pole vault and the a member of 4×400 meter relay team, Kenzie Price in the 200 and 400 meter dashes and relays and Rileigh Schwartz in the triple jump and 300 m hurdles. The girls’ team tied for seventh place at the conference meet last year.
“We lost several very good athletes, but the girls we have have already started setting some big goals and we look forward to lots of growth from them this season,” said Klatt.
Klatt went on to say that it’s hard to tell how the season will go because they have a fairly large group of freshmen on the team this year.
One thing he suspects, however, is that Mondovi, Durand and Elk Mound will probably be their toughest competition.
“Mondovi, Durand and Elk Mound are always tough, and they are also twice our size,” he said.
Klatt has been coaching track and field for 20 plus years. He is joined this year by Matt Shepard who is in his first year of coaching track and field and Maddie Williams who has been coaching the sport for three years.
The roster for the Hilltopper team is:
Freshmen: Vettori Holden, Brycin Lybert, Jaiden Verdeja, Alletta Meijer, Addison Wakeling, Andrew Yang,
Sophomores: Erica Bauman, Charlie Bogie, Emma Cole, Ryley Dickmann, Lillie Fox, Olivia Heath, Tessa Klatt, Morgan Knops, Gus Kohler, Kylie Main, Yadi Moreno-Guillet, Eli Oberle,
