After dropping a 52-24 decision at rival Boyceville February 17 to start the final week of the regular season, the Glenwood City girls’ basketball team was looking to finish strong with a pair of wins as it prepared for the post season.
The Hilltoppers, however, earned a split. They pulled out a 38-37 conference win in Plum City last Thursday, February 20 to earn a sweep of their season series against the Elmwood-Plum City Wolves. Glenwood City finished 2-12 in the Dunn-St. Croix this year while E-PC was 0-14.
Glenwood City looked to cap the regular season with a win when it hosted Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran Saturday afternoon, February 22. The Lancers, however, prevailed 59-39.
Tenth-seeded Glenwood City (5-15) traveled to conference foe Mondovi, the number seven seed, last evening, Tuesday, February 25, for a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal contest. The victor will play at second-seed Durand-Arkansaw on Friday, February 28. The Panthers finished as the Dunn-St. Croix runner-up behind state-ranked and three-time defending conference champion Elk Mound.
Elmwood-Plum City
Glenwood City held a 24-17 halftime lead when it played in Plum City against the Elmwood-Plum City Wolves in last Thursday’s conference finale.
The Hilltoppers, who were outscored 20-14 in the second half, were fortunate to hang on for the 38-37 victory.
Glenwood City’s two conference wins this season have came against Elmwood-Plum City who finished without a D-SC victory and had just one win in the regular season.
Six Toppers scored in the February 20 win. Isabel Davis led the team both in points and rebounds with nine and ten, respectively. Anaka Eliason tallied eight points while Opal Voeltz and Kyra Flick each finished with seven points. Kaylin Brandt added seven rebounds and four points and Lille McGee tallied three points.
Glenwood City had six three pointers, but finished just 6-for-19 at the line.
Eau Claire Immanuel
Slow starts have plagued the Hilltoppers all season.
Unfortunately, Glenwood City fell behind early when it hosted Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon, February 22. It was the final regular season game for both squads.
Immanuel led 39-20 at halftime and went on to post a 59-39 win.
Davis finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Hilltoppers. Yadi Moreno and Kyra Flick each added eight points to the Toppers’ final tally.
Glenwood City made 11-of-12 foul shots with Davis finishing 6-for-6 at the charity stripe while Opal Voeltz and Kaylin Brandt made both of their free throw attempts.
The Toppers had four three pointers. Flick converted two and Lillie McGee and Moreno each had one.
