Topper girls begin new year with pair of wins

The Glenwood City girls’ basketball team tipped off the new year with a pair of non-conference victories against Lakeland Conference teams.
The Lady Hilltoppers returned to action following a 17-day holiday hiatus on Friday, January 3 when they traveled to Luck along with their male counterparts for a doubleheader. The girls snapped their three-game losing skid with a decisive 55-37 road victory over the Cardinals.
Glenwood City then kept that momentum rolling when it returned home this past Monday evening, January 6 to host Lake Holcombe and prevailed 70-29 to even its season record at 5-5.
Luck
Sophomore Tori Ohman and junior Anaka Eliason combined for 31 points to led Glenwood City to a 55-37 win in Luck last Friday.
Ohman netted 16 points and Eliason finished with 15 points as each had a pair of triples.
Glenwood City held a 22-14 advantage at intermission and extended that lead in the second half as it outscored Luck by ten – 33 to 23 – to take an 18-point victory.
Kaylin Brandt and Lillie McGee, both tallied six points with McGee sinking the Toppers other three. Isabel Davis added five points and led with eight rebounds and three assists.
The Toppers shot well from long range making five of its nine three-point attempts. The host Cardinals launched 22 shots from behind the arc, but made just four.
Glenwood City, however, continued to struggle at the charity stripe as it made just ten of its 24 attempts. Luck finished 5-for-12 at the line.
In the rebound department, both teams finished nearly even as the Toppers grabbed 32 to the Cardinals 33. Davis topped the locals with eight boards, Kyra Flick and Ohman each tallied five, McGee four and Yadi Moreno had three.
Opal Voeltz and Ohman both came away with four steals for Glenwood City which finished with 15.
Ruby Johansen led Luck in scoring and rebounds with nine and 12, respectively. Sophie Eder and Molly Cook added eight points each and Teagyn Hinkel chipped in with six points.
Lake Holcombe
Glenwood City put 46 first-half points on the scoreboard to essential locked up the victory this past Monday night when it hosted Lake Holcombe.
The Toppers offense was clicking along on all cylinders while their defense was giving the Lady Chieftains fits en route to a 46-14 halftime lead.
While Glenwood City backed off the scoring and defensive pressure in the second half, it still outpointed Lake Holcombe 24-15 on the way to a 70-29 victory.
For a second straight game, Tori Ohman and Anaka Eliason led a Glenwood City offense that made a season-high seven three pointers and saw nine of its 11-member varsity roster score points. Ohman topped all scorers with 18 points on 7-for-16 shooting with a three and a free throw. Eliason recorded a dozen points with a pair of threes and Isabel Davis also hit double figures as she finished with ten points. Opal Voeltz had nine points, McGee hit a pair of threes and finished with eight, and Kirah Krueger tallied seven points which also included a trey.
Glenwood City dominated the boards as it finished the contest with 52 rebounds. Ohman led in that department as well with 15, Davis added 11, and Voeltz pulled down eight.
The Toppers also had 20 steals and 13 assists. Krueger had six steals, Voeltz three and Ohman, Brandt, Flick and Eliason each added two. Davis led with five assists and Voeltz finished with four.
The Hilltoppers return to conference action this Thursday when they host Colfax. Glenwood City will then head to state-ranked and unbeaten Elk Mound next Tuesday, January 14.
