The Elk Mound girls’ basketball team, ranked seventh in the most recent Division 3 state coaches poll, earned a trio of lopsided wins over the past three weeks to remain unbeaten this season.
The Lady Mounders improved to 10-0 which includes a 4-0 record in Dunn-St. Croix action with victories over conference foe Spring Valley and Middle Border members Altoona and St. Croix Central.
After having the first of its two conference games against Spring Valley postponed a day by wintry weather, the Mounders made the trip to Cardinal territory on Friday, December 20 and left with a 63-29 win.
A week later, the girls hosted a doubleheader with its boys’ team as both Mounder squads took on Altoona. The girls derailed Altoona (5-6) with a 53-31 win in the Friday, December 27 non-conference contest.
Then on its first day back from the holiday break, Elk Mound traveled to Hammond to take on the St. Croix Central Panthers who sit atop the Middle Border Conference with a 3-0 mark and were 7-1 overall prior to the Thursday, January 2 tipoff. When the game ended, the Mounders had pinned a second, season loss on the Panthers with a convincing 49-25 win.
Spring Valley
A first-half offensive surge lead Elk Mound to a 63-29 victory over host Spring Valley December 20,
In a Dunn-St. Croix Conference contest that was delayed 24 hours due to weather-related school closures the previous day, the Lady Mounders jumped to 35-9 advantage by the end of the first half before they cruised to the 34-point win over the Cardinals.
Seven Elk Mound players scored in the win and three finished in double figures.

St. Croix Central
When conference leaders Elk Mound (D-SC) and St. Croix Central (Middle Border) met in Hammond Thursday, January 2 for a non-conference game that could be a preview of postseason play many observers expected a close contest.
And it was for a brief time in the first half.
After the host Panthers had knotted the game at 11 all, the Mounders responded with an 11-3 run to end the half and take a 22-14 advantage into the halftime break.
Elk Mound continued its dominance in the second half as it outscored St. Croix Central 27-11 over the final 18 minutes of action and nearly doubled up the host school with a 49-25 victory.
While both schools both made a trio of three-points shots, the Mounders were able to salt away the win at the free throw line where it held a huge advantage. Elk Mound went to the charity stripe 21 times and made 16 while St. Croix Central finished just two-for-six. That difference accounted for 14 of Elk Mound’s 24-point margin of victory.
Allie Robel was the Mounders leading scorer for a third consecutive contest as she finished with 14 points and added six rebounds and a team-leading three steals. Ellie Schiszik also finished in double figures with 11 points, nine of which came in the opening half. The following Tuesday, January 14, Elk Mound returns home to host the Hilltoppers of Glenwood City.
