ELK MOUND — The Elk Mound boys began the new season with a pair of home, non-conference wins.
In last Tuesday’s home and season opener, the Mounders scored a thrilling 65-62 double overtime win against Arcadia.
Three days later, Elk Mound followed it with another victory nipping visiting Stanley-Boyd 51 to 48.
Arcadia
Elk Mound appeared to have won its season opener versus Arcadia at the end of regulation when senior Logan Jerome attacked the rim and pivoted for a shot in the lane that went through the twine for the apparent victory.
The basket, however, was waved off when Jerome was whistled for a travel. That left the game knotted at 48 at the end of regulation.
The Mounders trailed 27-23 at the break.
Both teams netted eight points in the first extra period, but the Mounders outpointed the Orioles 9 to 6 in the second overtime period to claim the three-point win.
“Logan Jerome had a monster game with rebounds and points,” said Elk Mound’s first-year head coach Dennis Arneson.
Jerome topped all scorers with 23 points and added a dozen rebounds for the Mounders who finished with 30 in the game. The senior had 11 points in the first half, six in the second half and another half dozen in the overtime periods.
Cale Knutson added 13 for the Mounders and Zeb Robinson, who nailed three of his team’s six triples, finished with 11. Kamron Diermeier finished with six points and six assists.
Elk Mound was 9-for-14 at the charity stripe.
Arcadia had four players finish the game in double figures. Kaiden Rotering topped the Raiders with 20 points, Trevor Pronschinske netted 13, Ted Teske finished with 12 and Deklyn Grzadzielewski had ten.
Stanley-Boyd
Elk Mound found itself in a tight battle with Stanley-Boyd when the future Cloverbelt competitors met on the Mounders’ floor last Friday, December 6.
The Mounders, who led 23-21 at the intermission, held off the Orioles in the second half to post a 51-48 win.
Cale Knutson and Victor Noller had the hot offensive hands for the Mounders as they led the way with 23 and 16 points, respectively. Knutson was responsible for all five of Elk Mound’s triples, had seven boards and a pair of steals. Noller went 6-for-7 from field, made all four of his free tosses and secured a half dozen rebounds.
Despite scoring just four points in this contest, Logan Jerome led the Mounders with nine boards and six assists. Diermeier and Robinson scored three points and Parker Dutzle finished with a deuce.
Elk Mound made 14 of its 20 free throw tries.
Elk Mound played in Prescott Monday and will begin Dunn-St. Croix action this Thursday at Durand-Arkansaw.
