The Elk Mound girls’ basketball team moved its early-season record to 5-0 with a pair of victories last week including a win in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener.
The Lady Mounders had a tough test in last Thursday’s conference opener as they hosted title contender Durand-Arkansaw. Elk Mound controlled the game from start to finish as it outpointed the Panthers in both halves to take a 48-34 win.
Playing two days later at Colfax in the annual Western Wisconsin Girls’ Basketball Classic, Elk Mound tipped off against Chippewa Falls McDonell in the last of the event’s eight games that pitted Dunn-St. Croix schools against their counterparts from the Cloverbelt West. The Mounders handled the Macks with ease as they won 60-23.
Elk Mound played in Boyceville last night and host rival Colfax this Friday.
Durand-Arkansaw
Elk Mound outscored visiting Durand-Arkansaw in both halves to take a 48-34 win in the pair’s Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener last Thursday, December 5.
The Mounders held a slight 23-17 advantage at the intermission and also outscored the Panthers 25-17 in the final stanza for the 14-point win.
“I thought we did a good job of taking care of the basketball, and being consistent on the defensive end,” stated Jordan Kongshaug, Elk Mound’s head coach.
Junior Belle Kongshaug led all scorers with 16 points which included four of her team’s six three-point buckets.
Six other Mounders etched their names in the score book. Senior Ellie Schiszik was the only other Mounder in double figures as she finished with ten points and a team-high seven assists. Allie Robel and Hailey Meyer each tallied six points with Robel grabbing eight of the squad’s 19 rebounds while Meyer had three steals to lead her team.
Allie Roder tallied five points, six rebounds and had a pair of steals, Kendra Garnett finished with a triple and Claire Roff had a two-point hoop.
Elk Mound, however, was just 10-for-22 at the free throw line.
Emma Hoyt scored a dozen to lead the Panthers in scoring.
McDonell Central
Although Elk Mound had to wait until nearly 9 p.m. to take the hardwood in Colfax last Saturday, when they finally did, the Mounders hit the floor running and didn’t stop until the final horn sounded, putting up 30 points in each half to drub the Chippewa Falls McDonell Central Macks, a state tournament qualifier a season ago, by a 60-23 count.
Nine different players scored in the Mounders’ lopsided win. Hot-handed Belle Kongshaug tallied a dozen points on four, three-point hoops. Ellie Schiszik also had 12 points including two from behind the arc. Allie Roder added 11 points and Allie Robel and Hailey Meyer chipped in with eight points each.
Robel also had 12 of the team’s 30 rebounds and half of its six steals.
Kongshaug and Schiszik had three assists and Taylor Frinack, Kendra Garnett, Jaidynn Sarauer and Roder all finished with a pair.
The Mounders were 10-for-14 at the line.
Kendall Hepfler was the Macks’ top point getter with nine.
