CLAYTON — Glenwood City got off to slow start having scored just 11 first-half points when it visited Clayton last Tuesday, November 26 for a non-conference girls’ basketball game.
Despite doubling its scoring output in the second half, the Hilltoppers lost 47-35 to the host Bears, which evened the locals early season record at 1-1.
After trailing 19-11 at the intermission, Glenwood City was able to dump in 24 points in the final 18 minutes of regulation play. Clayton, however, still outscored the Toppers with a 28-point, second-half effort to take the 12-point win and improved to 2-1.
Lillie McGee and Isabel Davis led the Toppers in scoring with nine points each. All of McGee’s scoring came from behind the arc as she finished 3-for-3 in the three-point department. Meanwhile, Davis picked up her points on a 4-of-12 shooting effort and sank one of her three foul shots.
Tori Ohman added six points, Kaylin Brandt had five, Anaka Eliason added four points, and Yadi Moreno contributed a two-point basket to account for the rest of Glenwood City’s scoring.
Davis also led the team in rebounding as the senior corralled just over a third or 12 of the team’s 35 boards. Opal Voeltz collected half a dozen rebounds with Kirah Krueger tallying five, Brandt four, and Kyra Flick and Eliason a trio each. Voeltz, Krueger, and Eliason each finished with a pair of assists. Ohman blocked three shots and had a pair of steals.
The Lady Hilltoppers have a busy week with three scheduled contests. They hosted Cornell in a non-conference doubleheader with the boys’ team last night, open their Dunn-St. Croix schedule at home versus Spring Valley Thursday, then finish out the week in Colfax with a Saturday afternoon, non-conference game (3:30 p.m.) against Thorp, which is part of the Northwest Girls’ Basketball Classic. A tournament that features a full slate of contests between the Dunn-St. Croix and Cloverbelt Conference schools. Then, next Tuesday, December 10, Glenwood City travels to Mondovi for a conference game.
