After having its 27-game win streak snapped in a sectional finals loss to Baldwin-Woodville last spring, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team simply started a new one to open its 2024-25 hardwood campaign.
The Lady Mounders scored double-digit wins over a pair of Middle Border teams when it tipped of the new season last week.
Elk Mound traveled to Prescott last Tuesday, November 19 in what was the season opener for squads and returned home a 57-45 victor. Two days later, in its home opener, the Mounders defeated Somerset 58-38 after leading 31-14 at the intermission.
Fall Creek was in Elk Mound Tuesday, November 26 for a non-conference contest. The Mounders are then off until December 5 when they begin defense of their Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship by hosting contender Durand-Arkansaw.
Prescott
The host Cardinals nailed seven, three-point shots in the first half, but still trailed the Mounders by eight points at the intermission of their November 19 non-conference game thanks to a 20-point, first-half performance by senior Ellie Schiszik. Last season’s D-SC player of the year, hit five three pointers in that first half.
Elk Mound then out-pointed Prescott, who finished second a year ago in the Middle Border, 19-16 over the final 18-minute half to claim a 57-45 victory.
While Schiszik finished with a game-high 25 points in Elk Mound’s season-opening win including all six of its three-point makes, the Mounders also got notable scoring contributions from fellow senior Allie Roder who had a dozen, junior Allie Robel tossed in eight and senior Hailey Meyer and junior Belle Kongshaug finished with six points each.
Robel also finished with 11 of the team’s 28 rebounds while Rodel and Kongshaug each grabbed a half dozen. Kongshaug led in assists with five.

Somerset
After a 25-point performance against their fellow conference member from Prescott two days earlier, the Spartans of Somerset were not going to let Ellie Schiszik go wild on the offensive end when the two teams meet in Elk Mound Thursday, November 21.
Playing tight defense on Schiszik throughout the contest, Somerset allowed her to score just nine points. But, what the Spartans did not account for were juniors Allie Robel and Belle Kongshaug. The pair combined for 30 points – 19 by Robel and 11 from Kongshaug – to lead the Mounders to a 58-38 win.
After taking a 31-14 advantage at halftime, Elk Mound outpointed Somerset 27-24 in the second half to post the 20-point victory.
Robel was also a force on the boards for the Mounders, pulling down over half of the team’s 37 rebounds to finish with a game-leading 19 and added four steals. Schiszik, who finished with seven of the Mounders’ 12 assists, netted three steals as did Kongshaug and Claire Roff, who finished with a two-point bucket.
Allie Roder added seven points and five boards, Hailey Meyer chipped in four points and three rebounds, Kendra Garnett added five rebounds and three points, and Teagan Mayer finished with three points.
Elk Mound was just 3-for-18 from behind the three-point arc, but made 11 of its 13 free throw attempts.
