GLENWOOD CITY — It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win.
Despite some missed shots, turnovers and a plethora of jump balls, the Glenwood City girls’ basketball team knocked off a bit of first-game rust and in the process the visiting Washburn Castle Guards in last Thursday’s season basketball opener for both squads.
Glenwood City grabbed the early advantage and lead throughout the game building a double-digit lead midway through the second half before Washburn, who made the three-plus hour excursion south to take on the Hilltoppers, cut the led to single digits. The Hilltoppers, however, refocused and hit some late baskets to prevail 40 to 27 in the November 21 non-conference contest.
The win was Ryan Tiberg’s first as Glenwood City’s new head coach. Tiberg also coached at Washburn over a decade ago.
Seven Hilltoppers scored in the victory led by sophomores Tori Ohman and Anaka Eliason who netted 11 and ten points respectively. Junior Opal Voeltz chipped in for eight, senior post Isabel Davis finished with four, sophomore Kirah Krueger tallied three and juniors Lillie McGee and Kyra Flick each made a 2-point hoop.
Glenwood City made 9 of its 10 first-half free throws and got a pair of buckets from Voeltz and Eliason to lead the Castle Guards 19-11 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Hilltoppers took just four foul shots, making two, but made nine baskets compared to just five in the opening half. After scoring all five of her first-half points at the free throw stripe, Ohman made three hoops in the final 18 minutes of play. Eliason also had two more hoops during that span and Krueger made the Toppers’ only three-point shot of the game.
Washburn cut its deficit to nine points, at 32-23, with around nine minutes to play but Glenwood City was able to push its lead back to double digits and eventually took home the victory by 13 points.
Ohman not only led her team in scoring, but also in rebounding. She collected 13 of the Toppers’ 42 boards and tallied four steals. Davis finished with eight rebounds and three steals while Voeltz and Flick each registered five rebounds. Eliason secured six of the team’s 15 steals to lead in that category.
Glenwood City played at Clayton last evening, Tuesday, November 26, before taking time off for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Toppers will return to action next Tuesday, December 3 for another home non-conference game against Cornell. Dunn-St. Croix play gets underway on Thursday, December 5 when the Spring Valley Cardinals visit Glenwood City.
