LADYSMITH — The Hilltopper tried valiantly to cut down the Lumberjills in the pairs’ first-round regional match in the WIAA Division 4 volleyball tournament October 22.
Despite a lengthy drive, 11th seeded Glenwood City nearly pulled off the upset against host and sixth seed Ladysmith in last Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal. But, in the end, the Lumberjills prevailed three sets to two.
Ladysmith started strong as it took the opening set 25-15.
Undaunted, Glenwood City rallied to pull off a 2-point, 25-23 second-set victory to even the match.
The Lumberjills went back ahead with a 25-20 win in the third game.
The Hilltoppers, however, evened the score as they flipped the result in the fourth set to take a 25-20 win.
Glenwood City, however, ran out of steam in the fifth and final set as Ladysmith took it and the match by a 15-7 count to end the locals season.
Match statistics were not available.
The Hilltoppers finished the season 4-19.
It was the final match for seniors Brooklynn Brite, Jenna McCarthy, Morgan Blaser, Kiley Leduc and Isabel Davis.
