SPRING VALLEY — With three runners placing in the top ten, the Glenwood City high school boys’ cross country team took first place at the Spring Valley Cross Country meet held on October 3 at Spring Valley High School.
Clayton Hoffman took second in the race with a time of 17:23.8, Garrett Gross took fourth with a time of 18:19.4 and Elliott Springborn took fifth with a time of 18:27. Sixty-seven runners competed in the 5K varsity boys race and Zayne Richardson of Durand-Arkansaw placed first with a time of 17:04.7.
Eli Oberle and IIan Anderson were the fourth and fifth runners for the Hilltopper team. Oberle placed 13th with a time of 19:19.8 and Anderson placed 20th with a time of 19:56.9. As a result, the team scored just 40 points.
Prescott came in second at 46 points, Durand-Arkansaw placed third with 61 points, Elk Mound was fourth with 111, Boyceville was fifth with 119 and Spring Valley came in sixth with 143 points. Runners from Colfax and Elmwood-Plum City also competed but did not have enough athletes to form teams.
In the varsity girls’ competition, Glenwood City was two runners short of a team. In fact, only half of the eight schools competing had enough runners to make a team. In addition to Glenwood City, Colfax, Elmwood-Plum City and Spring Valley did not have enough runners to form teams.
Boyceville placed first with 35 points, Prescott was second with 42 points, Elk Mound took third with 74 and Durand-Arkansaw placed fourth with 78 points.
Elsja Meijer was the first Hilltopper to cross the finish line in the varsity girls’ race. She placed 29th with a time of 24:49. Erica Buaman placed 37th with a time of 26:28.9 and Alletta Meijer placed 39th with a time of 27:18.9. Kyra Dix of Prescott took first out of 47 runners with a time of 20:51.4
Middle School
The Glenwood City middle school girls’ team placed sixth out of eight teams and the middle school boys placed sixth out of six teams at the Spring Valley meet.
Jaycie Oberle won the middle school girls’ 3k race with a time of 11:20 out of 66 runners. Other runners on the team were: Emilyn Hoffman who placed 10th, Mariah Bolden who placed 22nd, Bailey Millermon who placed 46th and Jordan Millermon who placed 51st.
In the middle school boys’ race, Lyle Wagner was the first Hilltopper over the finish line. He placed sixth out of 65 runners. Other racers were: Gavin Bacon who placed 18th, Trevor Gross who placed 36th, George Lorenz who placed 38th, Gavin Lovgren who placed 57th and Rex Boyles who placed 62nd.
