The Glenwood City volleyball team closed out the regular season playing two of the conference’s top teams last week.
The Hilltoppers traveled to Elmwood last Tuesday, October 15 to face Elmwood-Plum City, who finished second in this year’s final Dunn-St. Croix standings. The first two matches were very competitive, but the Wolves eventually prevailed in three sets.
Two days later, Glenwood City welcomed last season’s conference champs, the Cardinals of Spring Valley, in the home, conference and season finale. Despite another competitive performance from the Hilltoppers, they were once again swept as the Cardinals finished with a 4-3 record, good for a third-place tie with Elk Mound and Mondovi.
That final loss left Glenwood City winless in conference action at 0-7 and 4-18 overall.
The Hilltoppers headed into the WIAA Division 4 tournament as an 11th seed. They were at sixth seed Ladysmith last evening (Tuesday, October 22) for a regional quarterfinal’s match. The victor will take on Elmwood-Plum City who received an opening-round bye as the third seed.
Elmwood-Plum City
Glenwood City threw an early scare into second-place Elmwood-Plum City when they faced off in Elmwood last Tuesday, October 15.
The Hilltoppers pushed the Wolves to the limit in the first two sets only to end up on the losing end by just a couple of points. Glenwood City lost the opening game 21-25 and the second 23-25.
The Wolves, however, found their groove by the third set and went on to earn the three-set sweep with a convincing 25-16 win that final set.
The Wolves finished with 41 kills and 48 defensive digs in the match.
No statistics for Glenwood City were submitted to the Tribune Press Reporter prior to the publication deadline or made available online.
Spring Valley
Although the Cardinals were unable to successfully defend the conference crown that they had won a season ago, they have proved to be one of the conference’s top teams again this year.
Spring Valley was looking to secure its fourth conference win and lock up a share of third place when they visited Glenwood City last Thursday, October 16 for the regular season finale.
The Cardinals came out flying in the opening set and won 25-11.
The Hilltoppers, however, played much better in the subsequent sets. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were still able to win the match in three sets as they scored a 25-20 win in the second game and a 25-21 victory in the third and final set.
Glenwood City finished with 21 kills in the contest with a dozen of those turned in by senior Isabel Davis. Hailey Ketola tallied 16 of Glenwood City’s 18 assists. Davis and fellow senior Jenna McCarthy each had a trio of ace serves. The Toppers compiled 53 digs in the three-set match with Opal Voeltz getting 18 and Brooklyn Brite 14.
