Hilltoppers run at Barron, boys take fourth

BARRON — The Glenwood City varsity boys’ cross country team placed fourth out of ten teams at the Barron Invitational held at Barron High School on Tuesday, September 24.
Hayward won the invitational with a score of 49, Cameron took second with a score of 93 and Shell Lake took third with 102 points. The Glenwood City varsity boys scored 107 points and beat Cumberland, Spooner, Baldwin-Woodville, Bloomer, Prairie Farm and St. Croix Falls.
The first Hilltopper over the finish line was junior Clayton Hoffman who placed sixth out of 91 runners with a time of 17:39.50. Seth Rogge of Bloomer placed first in the race with a time of 16:39.90.
Senior Elliott Springborn was the teams’ second runner. He placed 12th with a time of 18:42.80. Ilan Anderson, also a senior, was the third runner placing 28th with a time of 20:02.30. Sophomore Eli Oberle placed 29th coming in eight seconds after Springborn.
Senior Zeb Holden rounded out the scoring members of the team. He placed 38th with a time of 20:41.30.
The Glenwood City girls’ varsity runners were one member shy of forming a team. The four athletes that ran the race were: Kayley Dickmann who placed 25th with a time of 23:33.70, Elsja Meijer who placed 47th with a time of 25:30.80, Erica Bauman who placed 73rd with a time of 27:35.20 and Aletta Meijer who placed 80th with a time of 29:07.90.
Ninety four runners participated in the 5K girls’ varsity race. Bloomer won the girls’ competition with 31 points. Ciara Hartman, a sophomore from Bloomer, took first with a very impressive time of 18:03.90, coming in almost a full minute and a half in front of the second-place finisher.
Middle School
In the 3K junior high girls’ competition the Hilltopper team placed fourth out of ten teams with a score of 117. Cameron took first with 38 points.
Jaycie Oberle placed second for the Glenwood City middle school girls’ team with a time of 12:16.80 out of 129 runners.
Other teammates that scored were: Emilyn Hoffman who placed 12, Mariah Bolden who placed 33rd, Sadie Rudolph who placed 43rd and Bailey Millermon who placed 57th.
The junior high boys were also one member short of a team. Athletes that participated in the race, which included 126 runners were: Lyle Wagner who placed 22nd, Trevor Gross who placed 65th, George Lorenz who placed 67th and Rex Boyles who placed 116th.
