It was not how the Mounders’ volleyball team wanted to open Dunn-St. Croix play.
Elk Mound dropped its 2024 conference opener in Boyceville last Thursday, September 19 as the host Bulldogs earned the five-set victory.
Two days later, the Lady Mounders competed in the Eau Claire North Husky Invite where they finished 2-2 on the day.
Elk Mound traveled to Colfax Tuesday, September 24, for its only contest of the week.
Boyceville
Heading into last Tuesday’s Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener in Boyceville, the Mounders were looking to start league play with a win.
The Bulldogs, however, had other ideas as they won a 5-set thriller, three sets to two, and claimed their first match win versus the Mounders since the 2016 season.
With the exception of the fourth set which Elk Mound won handily, the other four were highly competitive.
The Mounders started with a 25-19 win in set one. The Bulldogs rebounded to win the next two by scores of 25-22 and 26-24 to take a two sets to one lead.
Elk Mound evened the match and forced a fifth and final set with a dominating 25-7 victory in the fourth game.
The Mounders took an early advantage in the final set, but the Bulldogs were able rally for a 7-7 tie. From there the teams went back and forth until the Bulldogs were able to get a two-point lead at 12-10 and then went on to claim a 15-12 win to take the match.
Husky Invite
Elk Mound finished 2-2 at the Eau Claire North Husky Invitational held Saturday, September 21.
In pool play, Elk Mound defeated New Richmond 2-0 by scores of 25-19 and 25-18, lost both sets to Osceola 20-25 and 10-25, and also lost to Bloomer 0-2 on identical scores of 20-25.
In the crossover game, the Mounders swept Prescott 25-23, and 25-18.
