CAMERON — At the WIAA Division 3 track and field sectional meet held in Cameron last Thursday, May 23, six Hilltopper athletes qualified for the state championship meet by placing fourth or higher in their events.
In the pole vault, senior Haylie Hannah vaulted her way to state with a jump of 10 feet 6 inches. She placed third in the event with the top two finishers clearing 11 feet 3 inches and 11 feet 9 inches. Hannah finished second in last year’s state pole vault competition.
Sophomore Brady Thompson qualified for state by placing fourth in the 400 meter run with a time of 51.34 seconds coming in less than two seconds behind those placing above him.
Thompson is also a member of the team’s 4×800 relay which placed fourth with a time of 8 minutes 28.37 seconds to earn a state berth. Other members of that relay are Ilan Anderson, Clayton Hoffman and Elliott Springborn. The Grantsburg team won the event with a time of 8 minutes 20.10 seconds.

Senior Conner Gross is headed to state in the shot put. At the meet in Cameron, he threw the shot 47 feet and three-quarter inches which earned him a fourth place in the event. Top finishers in the event threw over 48 feet.
Other section competitors for the Hilltopper included sophomore Kyra Flick who was sixth in the shot put, sophomore distance runners Clayton Hoffman and Garrett Gross who were 14th and 15th, respectively, in the 3,200 meters, senior Tucker Augeson placed 14th in the shot put and junior Tyler Harrington finished ninth in the high jump. The boys’ 4×400 m relay team of Justin Rogers, Brady Thompson, Ilan Anderson and Elliott Springborn just missed a state berth when they finished fifth. The boys’ 4×100 m relay squad finished ninth.
Thirty six teams competed in the girls’ competition with Fall Creek winning at 72 points. The two Hilltopper girls that made it to sectionals scored nine points to finish 23rd in the final team standings. In the boys’ competition, Grantsburg took first out of 38 teams with a score of 53. Glenwood City placed 15th in that competition earning 19 points.
The WIAA state championships will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial Complex on the UW-La Crosse campus this Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1.
