FALL CREEK — Although the softball season came to an end for Glenwood City with last Wednesday’s 12-2, five-inning loss to state-ranked Fall Creek in the Division 4 regional semifinal, the Hilltoppers did not go down without a fight.
Facing the Crickets (26-2), undefeated champions of the Cloverbelt West Conference as well the division’s second-ranked team in the most recent state coaches poll and a top tournament seed, the Hilltoppers showed determination and grit as they played hard until the final out in the May 22 contest, which had to be postponed a day due to the heavy rain storms that blew through the area the previous day.
Glenwood City, unfortunately, just did not have the firepower to stay with Fall Creek who collected 14 hits off the Toppers’ senior pitcher Maddie Klatt who took the loss. Klatt gave up only two free passes and had a strike out in four innings of work.
The Hilltoppers managed just three hits in the game. Kiley Leduc hit a double and had both of Glenwood City’s RBIs. Senior Sydney Grant had the other two Topper hits as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored both of her team’s runs. Jenna McCarthy drew three of the six walks surrendered by the Cricket pitcher.
Glenwood City finished its 2024 campaign with a 6-13 and finished sixth in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference standings with a 3-11 mark.
With the season-ending loss, the Hilltoppers had to say goodbye to seven seniors. Departing the program are Maddie Klatt, Madison Caress, Sydney Grant, Michaela Blaser, Avery Rubenzer, Nikki Multhauf and Natelle McCarthy.
