COLBY — Two Elk Mound track and field athletes qualified for state in four events at the WIAA division two sectional track meet held in Colby on May 23. They are junior Keinin Miller in the 100 and 200 meter races and senior Grandt Mueller in high jump and triple jump.
Mueller competed in high jump, long jump and triple jump at the meet. In the high jump, he placed fourth with a leap of 6 feet 2 inches. In the triple jump, he jumped 42 feet 1 inch, 4 inches behind the top two finishers. In the long jump, he just barely missed qualifying for state placing fifth with a jump of 20 feet 10 inches.
Miller competed in three events at the Colby meet. He placed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.29 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, he earned a second place with a time of 22.28 seconds. He also was a member of the 4×100 relay team along with Riley Krall, Jay Meyer and Carson Streifel. The relay team placed fifth with a time of 44 seconds.
To qualify for state athletes need to place fourth or higher.
None of Elk Mound’s six girls that competed in individual sectional events were able to secure a state berth.
The highest finish turned in was a fifth-place finish by senior Lydia Levra in the 400m. She also took sixth in the 200m and came in 11th in the 100m just behind teammate Taylor Frinack who was tenth.
The Elk Mound boys finished eighth out of 30 teams with 35points. Osceola took the title with 97 points.
The Mounder girls tied for 26th place with Spooner and Baldwin-Woodville as each finished with 8 points. Rice Lake scored 73 points, five more than runner-up Bloomer, to top the field of 32 girls’ teams that scored points
The state championships will be held this Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1 in La Crosse.
