Some might say that the Hilltoppers have impeccable timing.
With regular season winding down and the WIAA tournament series just a week from starting, Glenwood City is playing some of its best golf of the season as evidenced by their performances on area courses last week.
Playing in the final two, nine-hole Dunn-St. Croix meets this season, which were held last Thursday, May 9 at the Whitetail Golf Course south Colfax, the Hilltoppers scored a pair of second-place finishes to strenghten their hold on second place in the conference team standings heading into Monday’s 18-hole D-SC tournament that was held on their home course at Glen Hills.
The following day, Glenwood City topped the nine-school field at the Webster Invitational held at Voyager Village Golf Course, site of next Tuesday’s Division 3 regional meet. The Hilltoppers finished the 18-hole tournament with a team score of 345, 28 strokes less than runner-up Birchwood.
Whitetail Meet #1
After inclement weather had postponed an earlier conference meet at Whitetail, the five Dunn-St. Croix schools that sponsor golf teams held a pair of nine-hole conference meets at the Colfax course last Thursday, May 9 to wrap up the league’s regular season.
In the morning session, which was meet number one at Whitetail but conference meet number seven overall, Glenwood City finished in a tie for second place with host Colfax-Elk Mound as both squads finished with 177 strokes.
A pair of local golfers finished in the top ten. The team’s number one golfer, junior Esdyn Swenby, scored a 40 on the back nine to finish in a tie with Colfax-Elk Mound’s Zane Brice for third place. Junior Charles Lamb carded a 44 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. Seniors Ben Wittmer and Brett Peterson shot a 46 and a 47, respectively to place 13th and 14th. Peterson had the highlight of the day as he scored an eagle on the par-4 hole number four. Sophomore Landon Obermueller also shot a 47 to complete the Toppers’ varsity scores.

Whitetail Meet #2
After a brief lunch break, competitors hit the front nine at Whitetail last Thursday afternoon for the eighth and final nine-hole Dunn-St. Croix meet for 2024.
Glenwood City shaved a whopping 12 strokes off its team tally in the day’s later meet and finished with a 165 to place second behind Durand-Arkansaw who cut seven strokes from its second-meet total for a 148 to once again finish in first place. Colfax-Elk Mound shot a 173 to take third, Spring Valley jumped to fourth with a 194 and Mondovi slipped back to fifth with a 197.
Swenby placed fourth after shooting a 39 to once again lead the Hilltoppers. Senior Ben Wittmer finished just one stroke and two places behind Swenby as he tallied a 40 to take sixth. Junior Charles Lamb tied for seventh with a 42. Finishing in three-way tie for 11th with a score of 44 was sophomore Landon Obermueller. Senior Brett Peterson closed out the Toppers’ varsity scores with a 50.
