After winning its first 14 games of the season, the state-ranked Elk Mound baseball squad suffered its first defeat at a tournament in Prescott.
Although the Mounders perfect season came to an end last week, they are still unbeaten in conference play (11-0) following a pair of shut-out victories. Elk Mound claimed a 10-0 road win at rival Colfax last Monday, May 6 (see story elsewhere in this issue) and followed it with another conference road win Thursday as it blanked Mondovi 9-0. The Mounders headed to Fall Creek the following day and returned home with a 5-1 win over the Crickets.
Sticking with the road theme for the week, the Black and Orange traveled to Prescott this past Saturday for an invitational. Division 1 La Crosse Logan defeated Elk Mound 5-2 in the tournament opener. The Mounders, however, rebounded for a 13-3 win over Ashland in six innings to improve to 15-1 on the year.
Elk Mound has a trio of conference games slated for this week. The Mounders hosted Spring Valley Monday and Boyceville on Tuesday. They play at Durand-Arkansaw this Thursday and wrap up the regular season next Tuesday, May 21 with a non-conference game in Spooner. WIAA playoffs are set to get underway on Thursday, May 23 with regional quarterfinal action.
Mondovi
The Mounders hit the defending conference champion Buffaloes hard when they visited Mondovi Thursday, May 9.
Elk Mound collected 13 hits off Mondovi pitching including three doubles while senior pitching ace Kaden Russo allowed just a pair of hits in six innings on the mound en route 9-0 win, the team’s third straight conference shutout.
Elk Mound jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. It increased that advantage to 6-0 with four runs in the fourth and added a pair of sixth-inning scores and a final one in the seventh.
Carter Vieth and Kamron Diermeier each had a trio of hits including a double each to lead the Mounder offense. Vieth scored three times and had two RBIs while Diermeier touched home twice and also added a pair of RBIs and was credited with both of Elk Mound’s stolen bases. Russo helped his cause with two hits, Lucas Johnson also added a pair of hits including a double and finished with three RBIs.
Russo earned the mound victory after he allowed just two hits without a run. He struck out a dozen Mondovi batters and walked four. Diermeier pitched the seventh and registered three strikeouts with a walk and did not allow a hit or run.
Fall Creek
A four-run third inning lifted Elk Mound to a 5-1 win over host Fall Creek Friday, May 10.
Elk Mound scored its final run in the top of the seventh. Fall Creek’s lone score came in the bottom of the third.
Eight different players accounted for the Mounders nine hits in the contest. Russo went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Peyton Vieth and Kamron Diermeier each finished with a double. Victor Noller, Jake Osborne, Carter Garnett, Lucas Johnson and Carter Vieth each had a single.
The Mounders used four pitchers in the game. Diermeier threw an inning an a third, striking out one Cricket batter and allowing just their lone run on two hits to pick up the pitching victory. Quinton Spehle and Brayden Borek each tossed two innings of scoreless ball with Borek registering two strikeouts and Spehle one. Victory Noller threw an inning and two thirds where he allowed two hits without a run, had two strikeouts and walked one.
Prescott Invitational
Elk Mound suffered its first loss of the 2024 season when it fell to La Crosse Logan, 5-2, in its opener at the Prescott Invitational on Saturday, May 11.
Both teams scored a run in the first. The Rangers went in front with a run in the top of the third, but the Mounders knotted the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Logan took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth and added an insurance score in the seventh to take the game 5-2.
Victor Noller picked up two of the Mounders six hits in the game.
Kamron Diermeier, who scored one of Elk Mound’s two runs, suffered the pitching loss. He threw three and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on three hits and tallied a pair of Ks. Victor Noller tossed two and a third innings and also surrendered two runs on three hits and finished with two strikeouts and two walks. Brayden Borek took the mound for an inning, allowing a run, a hit and struck out one and gave up a walk.
Elk Mound’s bats came to life in the second game of the day. The Mounders punched out 11 hits on their way to a 13-3, six-inning win over Ashland.
Kaden Russo went 3-for-4 which included a home run, tallied two RBIs and scored three runs. Victor Noller, Brady Amble and Peyton Vieth each had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Amble finished with four RBIs while Noller and Kamron Diermeier each had two RBIs.
Quinton Spehle went the distance on the mound for Elk Mound to earn the win. He struck out two, walked one, and allowed five hits and three runs in six innings of work.
