After winning five straight, the Elk Mound softball lost three of its four games last week including a split in a pair of Dunn-St. Croix Conference games.
The visiting Boyceville Bulldogs nipped the Mounders 1-0 in a Tuesday, April 30 battle for second place. Elk Mound, on an extended respite thanks to rain storms, didn’t play again until last Friday, May 3 when it hosted Glenwood City. The Mounders prevailed 10-0 in the five-inning contest. Then, less than 24 hours later, Elk Mound played and lost a pair of non-conference games in the Altoona triangular which was held at Cinder City Park. The host Rails shutout the Mounders 9-0 who then fell to Northwestern 4-3 in eight innings.
The Lady Mounders will head into the final week of the regular season with a 7-3 record in conference games and are 8-6 overall.
Elk Mound has three straight conference road games this week. The Mounders were at rival Colfax on Monday, head to Mondovi on Thursday and will be in Glenwood City the following day, Friday, May 10. On Saturday, Elk Mound will host Osseo-Fairchild and Somerset in a triangular. The Mounders then wrap up the regular season with a conference contest at home next Monday, May 13 versus Spring Valley followed by a non-conference game in Fall Creek on Tuesday, May 14. The WIAA tournament gets underway on Thursday, May 16 with regional action.
Boyceville
A single run in the top of the fourth inning was all Boyceville could muster when it visited Elk Mound April 30.
But, that lone score proved to be the game winner as the Bulldogs’ freshman hurler, Aubrey Malean, tossed a 3-hit shutout against the Mounders. She finished with seven Ks and walked a pair to earn the victory.
With two outs in the top fourth, the Bulldogs’ Zoey Hellendrung reached on a single. The very next batter, Jadynn Traxler laced a double to deep left center field that brought Hellendrung all the way to home plate for the 1-0 Boyceville lead.
Elk Mound looked to knot the score in the bottom of the fifth when Jaidynn Sarauer reached on a Boyceville fielding error, stole second and reached third on a fielder’s choice. But, Sarauer was stranded when Malean struck out Alexandra Solberg to end the Mounder threat.
Elk Mound also had opportunities to score in the sixth and seventh innings but came away empty. Hailey Meyer picked up a two-out single and Elisabeth Beskow walked to put runners on first and second. Autumn Moquin, however, grounded out in the next at bat to end the frame.
In the seventh, Sarauer doubled to deep center with one out but was left there when Malean struck out two consecutive Elk Mound batters to end the game.
Elk Mound finished with just three hits.
Meyer took the loss despite surrender just one run and only four hits to the Bulldogs. She struck out half a dozen and did not issue a walk.
Glenwood City
After the rain postponed Elk Mound’s home conference game versus Glenwood City by one day, the two squads met Friday, May 3.
Elk Mound dominated the five-inning affair 10-0 as it knocked out 13 hits including three for extra bases.
The Mounders scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and then ended the game with three scores in its half of the fifth.
Elisabeth Beskow and Hailey Meyer each collected three hits including a double and Ellie Schiszik tallied two hits with a double and three RBIs in four plate appearances. Alexis Joachim had two RBIs as did Beskow.
Meyer tossed the two-hit shut out to earn the pitching-circle win. She recorded seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Altoona Triangular
Despite some mid-morning rain, Elk Mound was able to play both of its games at Saturday’s Altoona softball triangular.
Unfortunately, the Mounders dropped both games losing 9-0 to host Altoona in the first contest which was followed by a 4-3 loss in eight innings to Northwestern.
Against Altoona, the Lady Mounders managed just two hits – singles by Elisabeth Beskow and Hailey Meyer – and no runs.
The Rails scored twice in the first, three times in the second and fourth innings and a run in the sixth.
Meyer took the pitching loss for Elk Mound as she surrendered ten of Altoona’s 11 hits and eight runs. She finished with three Ks and a walk. Elisabeth Beskow threw the final two frames and gave up a hit, a run and had two strikeouts with a walk.
In the second and final game of the day, Elk Mound fell behind 3-0 as the Tigers of Northwestern plated two runs in the first and another in the fifth.
The Mounders scored three runs in the sixth to knot the game but the Tigers plated a final run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 4-3.
Elk Mound finished with six hits in the game, three by Hailey Meyer who doubled and had a pair of RBIs and two, including a double, came off the bat of Kendra Garnett who also added an RBI. Ellie Schiszik provided the other Mounder hit which went for a double.
Meyer, who threw all eight innings, took the loss. She gave up four runs on eight hits, had two Ks and a pair of walks.
