Glenwood City softball’s bid for its second conference victory of the season fell just short as it lost a pair of close contests last week.
After falling 6-4 at home last Monday, April 22 to Elmwood-Plum City, who entered the game without a win, the Hilltoppers lost a 4-3 heartbreaker in Durand three days later.
Those latest two setbacks extended Glenwood City’s winless streak to four games and put its conference record at 1-5 and 2-5 overall.
The Hilltoppers have a busy schedule this coming week as they play five games in eight days including four Dunn-St. Croix matchups. Defending conference champion Mondovi was in Glenwood City this past Monday, April 29. The Toppers were in Plum City the next day for a re-match versus the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City. They play at second-place Elk Mound Thursday and return to Glenwood City on Friday to host the Cornell/Lake Holcombe cooperative in an out-of-league game. Next Monday, May 6, the Toppers go to Spring Valley.
Elmwood-Plum City
Glenwood City was looking for conference win number two when winless Elmwood-Plum City visited the Toppers’ home diamond April 22.
But, the Wolves used a four-run fourth inning to pick up their first win of the season as they stunned the Hilltoppers 6 to 4.
Despite collecting twice as many hits, ten to five, as Elmwood-Plum City, Glenwood City was unable to turn them into runs.
The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and made it five to nil game with their four-run fourth.
Glenwood City scored three times in the bottom half of the frame to pull to within a run.
Elmwood-Plum City then added a run in the fifth. Glenwood City scored its final run in the sixth, but couldn’t close the gap and lost by a pair of runs.
Seniors Maddie Klatt and Avery Rubenzer led the Topper offense with a pair of hits. One of Rubenzer’s hits went for a double as she finished with two RBIs. Isabel Davis and Brooklynn Brite also doubled for Glenwood City.
Klatt started inside the throwing circle for the Toppers and went four complete innings. She absorbed the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits with four Ks and a walk. Kirah Krueger pitched the final three frames, giving up a run without a hit while striking out four and walking three.
Glenwood City also had a pair of errors in the game.
Durand-Arkansaw
Despite hitting the ball well once again, Glenwood City fell a run short when it visited Durand Thursday, April 25, losing 4 to 3 to the Durand-Arkansaw Panthers.
Both teams finished with ten hits each.
Sydney Grant, Brooklynn Brite, Jenna McCarthy and Michaela Blaser each had two hits in the game. Both of McCarthy’s hits went for doubles as she tallied a pair of RBIs while Brite also smacked a two bagger.
The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the first and added single scores in the second and third innings for a 4-0 lead.
That score stood until the sixth when Glenwood City scored three times to cut its deficit to one run. Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers were unable to find another run and lost the game 4 to 3.
Maddie Klatt, who threw all six innings for Glenwood City, took the pitching loss. She gave up all four Panthers runs and three walks and tallied two strike outs.
