ELK MOUND — A display of overwhelming offensive firepower coupled with dominating pitching performances kept the Elk Mound baseball team unbeaten.
In a pair of five-inning, conference contests played at home last week, the Mounders pounded out 20 hits and scored 31 runs as it improved to 7-0 in Dunn-St. Croix action and 9-0 overall.
The Mounders, behind the one-hit pitching effort of senior Kaden Russo, opened the week with a 11-1 win against Durand-Arkansaw (2-5, 2-6) on Tuesday, April 23 and capped it two days later when they pounded visiting Elmwood-Plum City (0-8, 1-9) 20-1 at Village Park. Elk Mound has three games set for this week. The Mounders were scheduled to be in Boyceville Monday, April 29 to play the third-place Bulldogs before coming back home to host the Hilltoppers of Glenwood City on Thursday, May 2 followed by a non-conference contest with St. Croix Central the next day. The Mounders then have three straight road games next week beginning with a conference contest at rival Colfax on Monday, May 6.
Durand-Arkansaw
While Kaden Russo was mesmerizing Panther batters, the senior allowed just one hit in five inning of work, the Elk Mound offense provided plenty of support as it collected nine hits en route to a 11-1 victory over Durand-Arkansaw last Tuesday, April 23 on the home turf at Village Park.
After it had scored a run in the bottom half of the first, Elk Mound plated ten runs in the third to put the Panthers away in five innings as Russo allowed just a single hit, a double to Akin Fuentes, struck out eight opposing batters while walking just two to pick up the victory.
Durand-Arkansaw’s lone run came in their final at bat in the fifth inning.
Of the nine hits that the Mounders collected, four went for extra bases. Carter Vieth and Lucas Johnson both hit home runs for Elk Mound while Peyton Vieth and Russo each doubled. Russo not only picked up the mound win but finished as the only Mounder player with two hits in the game and had a couple of RBIs. Peyton Vieth tallied three RBIs to top the team charts while Johnson also added a pair on his third-inning home run and scored twice. Kamron Diermeier also touched home plate twice and had a pair of stolen bases.
Durand-Arkansaw finished with a pair of errors while Elk Mound did not have any.
Elmwood-Plum City
Elk Mound collected 11 hits, had 18 RBIs, drew 14 walks and put runs on the scoreboard in every inning of its 20-1 home blowout victory over Elmwood-Plum City last Thursday, April 25.
After the Wolves scored what turned out to be their only run of the game in the top of the first inning, the Mounders plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. They scored four runs in the second, five in the third, another four in the fourth and their final five runs in the fifth for the 19-run win.
Four Mounders each picked up two of the 11 team hits. Victor Noller, Kamron Diermeier, Lucas Johnson and Peyton Vieth all finished the game with a pair of hits. One of Johnson’s two hits went for a double as he finished with three RBIs. Carter Vieth tallied four RBIs to lead the Mounders as he walked twice, got a hit and scored three runs. Kaden Russo finished with three RBIs and scored three times. Diermeier and Brayden Borek also touched home plate three times while Carter Garnett and Jake Osborne finished with three and two RBIs, respectively.
Noller started on the pitching mound and gave four strong innings to earn the win. He allowed just one run on three hits and had six strikeouts with a pair of walks. Borek relieved Noller in the fifth frame and struck out two and allowed a hit but no runs.
