The 2024 softball campaign got off to a bit of a rocky start for Elk Mound.
The Lady Mounders went 1-2 in its first week of play on the softball diamond.
Elk Mound got the season and conference play underway with a 10-0 home shutout against the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City on Monday, April 1.
Unfortunately, the Mounders were not able to carry that momentum forward as their offense struggled to produce runs in the next two contest, a 3-1 road loss in Boyceville last Thursday, April 4 and a 5-3 setback at home versus non-conference foe Stanley-Boyd just 24 hours later.
The girls will have plenty of opportunities to right the ship as they play four games, three on the home field, over the next week. Elk Mound was in Glenwood City Monday, hosted Cadott on Tuesday, welcomes rival Colfax Thursday, and will host Mondovi this coming Monday, April 15.
Elmwood-Plum City
Junior pitcher Hailey Meyer tossed a one-hit shutout while the Elk Mound offense scored ten runs on just five hits to defeat the visiting Elmwood-Plum City Wolves 10-0 in five frames in the season and conference opener for both squads last Monday, April 1.
Leading 3-0, the Mounders came up with five runs in the bottom of the third and then scored twice more in their half of the fifth to bring the game to an early conclusion.
Meyer finished with 11 strikeouts in the game against just one walk to earn the pitching victory.
Jazmyn Shafer finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Elk Mound offense. Kendra Garnett and Alexis Joachim each had a hit as both also tallied a pair of RBIs.
The Mounders finished the game with eight stolen bases, two by Garnett and Ellie Schiszik and one each from Alexandria Solberg, Elisabeth Beskow, Meyer and Joachim.

Boyceville
Scoreless through the first two innings, Elk Mound took a 1-0 advantage in the top of third inning when Kendra Garnett scored following back-to-back, three-bag errors by the Boyceville outfield in a Thursday, April 4 Dunn-St. Croix Conference contest played at the Tiffany Creek Elementary softball diamond in Boyceville.
The Bulldogs knotted the game with a run in the bottom half of the fourth frame and then took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth to defeat the Mounders 3-1.
Hailey Meyer allowed just six Boyceville hits and struck out nine without surrendering a walk but took the loss as the Mounders managed just two hits in the full, seven-inning game and finished with a pair of errors.
Meyer and Alivia Baskin had Elk Mound’s only two hits, both singles.
Despite surrendering a half dozen walks to the Mounders and having to contend with three defensive errors, Boyceville freshman hurler Aubrey Malean earned the victory as she finished with eight strikeouts.
Hannah Dunn went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs to the win.
Stanley-Boyd
Elk Mound was unable to hold a 3-1 lead over visiting Stanley-Boyd in non-conference contest played last Friday, April 5.
The Orioles flew past the Mounders with three runs in the top of the sixth and another in the seven for a 5-3 win on Elk Mound’s home softball diamond.
Both squads finished the game with six hits, but the Lady Mounders committed four errors in the contest that helped the Orioles rally for the victory.
Stanley-Boyd pushed a run home in the top of the first. Elk Mound got the equalizer in the bottom of the third and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Mounders maintained the 3-1 advantage until the Orioles’ sixth frame.
Ellie Schiszik and Alivia Baskin both finished with a pair of hits for Elk Mound. Schiszik went 2-for-4 highlighted by an RBI triple while Baskin was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Baskin also stole a base and Kendra Garnett finished with two. Elisabeth Beskow, Autumn Moquin and Jaidynn Sarauer each scored a run for the hosts.
Hailey Meyer suffered his second straight loss in the pitching circle after surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits. She walked just a pair and tallied nine strikeouts.
