The Elk Mound girls’ basketball squad put an exclamation point on their regular season as it outscored Glenwood City by a combined score of 164 to 50 in a pair of Dunn-St. Croix contests last week.
The Lady Mounders traveled to Glenwood City Monday, February 12 to make-up a game that had been postponed a month early by a winter snow storm and came away with a head-spinning 90 to 31 victory on the Hilltoppers’ home court. Three days later, Elk Mound hosted Glenwood City for the conference and season finale and secured yet another lopsided victory by a count of 74 to 19.
The two wins over the Hilltoppers not only gave the Mounders their second straight undisputed conference championship with a 14-0 record but the program’s very first undefeated regular season as they finished 24-0.
The Dunn-St. Croix Conference crown is the Lady Mounders seventh. In addition to last year’s title, Elk Mound took conference championships in 1988, 1990, 2000, 2016 and 2017. The Mounders have also won regional titles in 1988, 2004, 2017 and last season. The 1987-88 squad is the only one to make a state-tournament appearance.
Elk Mound will look to continue its winning ways in the WIAA tournament series. The Mounders, the number one seed in the bottom half of the Division 3 Amery Sectional, received a first-round bye and will host the winner of the Adams-Friendship (#9) versus Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau (#8) quarterfinal game this Friday evening, February 23. With a victory, Elk Mound would also host the regional championship the following day, Saturday, February 24.
Glenwood City – Game 1
The Mounder girls had put the game well out of the Hilltoppers’ reach by halftime.
Elk Mound canned eight threes in the first half of its February 12 conference contest in Glenwood City as ten players hit the score book to give the visiting Mounders a mind-boggling 58-17 advantage at the break.
Junior Ellie Schiszik had 16 of her game-high 19 points including a pair of three-point baskets in that decisive opening half of play. Senior Lydia Levra and sophomore Isabella “Belle” Kongshaug also had two triples each in the first 18 minutes and juniors Jaidynn Sarauer and Allie Roder had one each.
Elk Mound continued to make the nets sing in the second half as it put in 32 points including four more threes, one each by Schiszik, Sarauer, Kongshaug and Teagan Mayer, to finish with a dozen three-points baskets in all.
The Mounders also finished 10-for-14 at the charity stripe in their 90-31 victory.
Fourteen of Elk Mound’s 15 varsity roster players scored at least one point in the game. Besides the 19 points by Schiszik, Roder and Kongshaug each tallied 11 points, Allie Robel, Hailey Meyer and Levra netted eight points each, Sarauer finished with seven, Chloe Dummer and Loftyn Awe each scored four, Mayer had three, Carly Mohr, Claire Roff and Elli Beskow two apiece and Kendra Garrett sank a free throw. Schiszik added seven steals, five assists and four rebounds all of which led the Mounders.
Jenna McCarthy led the Hilltoppers with 13 of her team’s 31 points which included a trio of first-half treys. Isabel Davis tallied four points and Morgan Blaser, Emma Bliese and Anaka Eliason each had a three-point basket for Glenwood City which finished with six. The Toppers only took seven foul shots and made just two.

Glenwood City – Game 2
With a three-day turn around, Elk Mound hosted Glenwood City in the conference and regular-season finale Thursday, February 15.
This contest played out much like the first one three days earlier with the Mounders taking a commanding first-half advantage as they went into the locker room with a 47-10 lead.
Schiszik once gain put in a majority of her game-leading 16 points in the opening frame. The junior hit two of her team’s four triples in that span and four deuces for 14 points at the break
Sophomore Allie Robel hit a pair of threes, one in each half, and finished with ten points. Senior Lydia Levra scored ten of her 14 points in the first half, fellow senior Chloe Dummer tallied eight points, two buckets in each half, and junior Allie Roder and senior Carly Mohr each finished the game with seven points.
Elk Mound, who made only 12 of its 21 free toss attempts, outpointed Glenwood City 27-9 in the final half.
Robel tallied eight rebounds to lead the Mounders and added four steals, Roder five assists, Levra finished with five steals and four assists, and Mohr had four steals.
Senior Libby Wagner topped Glenwood City with six points and Kaylin Brandt, Morgan Blaser and Tori Ohman each finished with three points.
Glenwood City had just two triples but made seven of its ten foul shots.
