PLUM CITY — In its only game last week, the Glenwood City girls’ basketball team traveled to Plum City Thursday, January 18 where it used a three-prong offensive attack from freshman Tori Ohman, sophomore Anaka Eliason and junior Isabel Davis to deliver a 56-40 knock out of the Elmwood-Plum City Wolves and earned the Toppers the regular-season sweep of the conference series.
In doing so, the Hilltoppers have won five games for the first time since the 2020-21 season. Coupled with 61-41 home win over the Wolves back on December 5 and the recent victory against the rival Bulldogs, Glenwood City is now 3-4 in league play, good for sixth place, and 5-11 overall.
Ohman scored 19 points – 12 of which came in the opening stanza, Eliason, who had just one basket at halftime, tallied 14 points in the final 18 minutes of play to finish with 16, and Davis netted 13 points as that Topper triumvirate led the squad to its second road win of the year.
The dozen points Ohman tossed in during the first half accounted for more than half of Glenwood City’s points. Davis chucked in five more points on two hoops and a free throw and senior Libby Wagner added a pair of deuces as the two teams went into the intermission deadlocked at 23 all.
While Ohman cooled a bit in the second half, hitting just three conventional baskets while missing seven of her eight freebies, Eliason and Davis heated up on a cold winter’s night.
Eliason and Davis along with Ohman, spearheaded a second-half offensive surge that saw the Hilltoppers score 33 points while holding the Wolves to 17 for the 16-point triumph.
Wagner and Kyra Flick were the only other Toppers to score in the contest. Wagner finished with six and Flick scored a hoop early in the second half.
It was far from a perfect game, however, for the Hilltoppers. As it has for much of this season, Glenwood City struggled mightily at the free throw line getting only two of its 17 attempts through the cylinder. The Toppers also finished the game without a three-point make.
The Wolves, who finished with four triples, also had a difficult time from the charity stripe as they connected on just six of their 22 tries.
Willow Cripe made three of the Wolves’ four three-point baskets and finished with 11 points to pace Elmwood-Plum City. Maddey Kopp added nine, Hailey Webb had eight and Aurora Sampair tossed in six points for the Wolves.
Glenwood City has a pair of conference games this week. After hosting Spring Valley last evening (Tuesday, January 23), the Hilltoppers travel to Mondovi Friday.
