ALTOONA — The Elk Mound girls’ basketball team had to put in a little “extra” work to remain unbeaten when it traveled to Altoona Thursday afternoon, December 28 for a non-conference tilt with the Lady Railroaders.
Elk Mound edged Altoona, who is 7-3 and currently sits in second place in the Middle Border Conference, 6 to 5 in the overtime period to pull out a 50-49 victory to improve to 11-0 as the season nears the midway point.
While Allie Robel dominated the game’s scoring with 24 of the Mounders’ 50 points, it was Carly Mohr, who scored all six of Elk Mound’s crucial overtime points, that secured the victory.
Knotted at 44 all at the end of regulation, Mohr took control in the four-minute overtime period as she scored a trio of deuces to help Elk Mound stay perfect on the season.
“It was a very good high school basketball game between two good teams,” stated Jordan Kongshaug, Mounders’ head coach.
“Our kids kept fighting and found a way to get it done at the end,” he added.
In the first half of play, Robel netted ten of the Mounders’ 20 points which included a pair of conventional three-point plays (a hoop and free throw). Elk Mound, however, trailed 22-20 at the intermission.
Robel continued to dominate play in the second half as she put in seven, two-point baskets for 14 points which when combined with five points from Ellie Schiszik and a pair of hoops by Mohr and Lydia Levra were enough to nip Altoona 24-22 and force overtime.
Complimenting Robel’s 24-point effort were Schiszik with 11 points, which included both of the Mounders’ three-point makes, and Mohr with ten.
Lindsey Hendricks and Alyssa Wirth led Altoona with 12 and ten points, respectively. Addison Siverling chipped in for nine and Josie Rondestvedt added eight for the Railroaders.
Elk Mound finished 22-for-52 shooting in the contest but were only 2-of-17 on three-point shoots and made just four of its ten foul shots. Altoona hit 18 shoots, six of which came from behind the three-point arc and were 7-for-14 at the charity stripe.
The Mounders finished with 23 rebounds led by Allie Robel’s seven, Ellie Schiszik and Carly Mohr each added four and Lydia Levra and Allie Roder finished with three each.
The Lady Mounders traveled to Bloomer for a non-conference game last evening (Tuesday, January 2). They returned home for a pair of conference games versus Spring Valley on Thursday, January 4 and Elmwood/Plum City next Tuesday, January 9.
