Elk Mound girls open D-SC Conference play with pair of impressive victories

Although it’s early, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team appears to be the team to beat in the race for the 2023-24 Dunn-St. Croix title.
The Lady Mounders, reigning champions, opened conference play last week with a pair of impressive double-digit road victories. Opening Dunn-St. Croix play in Mondovi Tuesday, December 5, Elk Mound dispatched the host Buffaloes 63-43. The Mounders followed that up three days later with a defensive gem in Durand as they caged the Panthers of Durand-Arkansaw, who finished in a second-place tie with Colfax a season ago and had just knocked off those same Vikings in Colfax Tuesday, by a score of 39-23.
With those two wins, Elk Mound improved to 7-0. The Mounders hosted St. Croix Central Monday and return to conference action in Boyceville Thursday.
Mondovi
A big first half put Elk Mound in charge of its Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener in Mondovi.
The Mounders bounded to a 37-20 halftime advantage against the host Buffaloes. In that opening half, Ellie Schiszik scored 12 of her team and game high 16 points which included a triple, a pair of deuces and a five-for-six performance at the charity stripe. Allie Robel, Allie Roder and Lydia Levra each added eight points to help Elk Mound establish a 17-point lead that Mondovi never recovered from.
With a balanced offensive attack, Elk Mound put up another 26 points in the second half for the 63-42 win.
Complimenting Schiszik were Roder with 14 points, Robel had 13 points and Levra ten.
Although the Mounders made just 16 of its 25 fouls shots, they finished with 30 rebounds, led by eight from Schiszik and seven by Roder and 17 steals with Schiszik and Roder again topping that statistic with five apiece.
Ava Gray was the only Mondovi player to finish in double digits as she finished with a dozen points. The Buffaloes went 17-for-27 at the free throw line and tallied four triples but committed 27 turnovers and made just four steals.
“It was a solid road victory,” said Jordan Kongshaug, Elk Mound head coach. “Mondovi played with a lot on intensity but we did a good job of pressuring the ball.
Durand-Arkansaw
Many were expecting a close game when Elk Mound traveled to Durand-Arkansaw Friday evening, December 8.
And it was, especially in the first half.
The Mounders where locked in a low scoring battle with the host Panthers.
Elk Mound led 16-11 at the intermission.
In the second half, however, the Mounders were able to put some breathing room between themselves and their hosts as they outscored the Panthers 23-12 over the final 18 minutes of play to post the 39-23 win.
Although it did not have any players crack double digits, Elk Mound had eight players score points in the contest. Robel and Schiszik led with eight points each, Roder added seven, Levra six, Hailey Meyer finished with four, Belle Kongshaug three, Chloe Dummer two and Carly Mohr one.
Schiszik and Roder topped the rebound charts with five apiece. Schiszik and Levra also finished with a pair of steals in the victory.
