DURAND — Running last Thursday, September 21 on Durand’s Rolling Greens Golf Course, site of next month’s Dunn-St. Croix Conference Cross Country Championships, the Elk Mound boys’ and girls’ teams both grabbed top five finishes in the Durand-Arkansaw Invitational that featured nearly two dozen schools from throughout West-central Wisconsin.
The Mounder girls, led by junior Ellie Schiszik, placed third with 116 points out of 14-complete teams that were vying for the title. Middle Border teams St. Croix Central and Somerset took the top two spots as the Panthers scored a low of 39 points to win the meet and the Spartans came in second with a 110.
Seven Elk Mound boys finished 45th or better in a field of 156 runners to propel the team to a fifth-place showing with 124 points. Fellow Dunn-St. Croix member Glenwood City took the boys’ championship crown with 68 points while Chetek-Weyerhaeuser scored 85 points to finish as the runner-up.
Schiszik’s time of 21:57.31 set the pace for the Lady Mounders as she finished seventh among the 126 runners that competed in the girls’ 5K race.
Jaidynn Sarauer was next to finish for the Elk Mound girls taking 21st in 23:37.42. Lola Jerome was the Mounders third runner to finish taking 32nd in 24:07.66. Rounding out the team scoring were Rhiana Fischer in 36th with a time of 24:15.39 and Marley King with a 24:18.2 to place 39th.
The ladies also had four other runners compete and finish at Durand last Thursday. Caroline Gabert was 68th in 25:58.62, Carly Mohr finished 108th with a 29:13.84, Yolo Delgado took 119th in 30:33.96 and Kaelyn Zais ran a 34:02.43 for 125th place.
Lili Klinkhamer of St. Croix Central was the girls top finisher with a time of 20:33.50.
The Mounder boys top three runners all came across the finish line in a 15 second span and placed 15th through 19th. Bodie Folcyzk was the first to finish taking 15th in 19:16,28, Caleb Beskow was 16th in 19:22.59, and Jesse Moyer took 19th in 19:30.05.
Elk Mound’s fourth through sixth place runners also finished in a tight grouping. Evan Lauer was 42nd in 20:44.99, Tyler Gagner ran a 20:47.95 to take 43rd and Dalton Banaszak took 45th following a run of 20:51.51.

Six others also represented the Elk Mound boys varsity squad. They were Cooper Reese (63rd, 21:31.30), Blake Niska (72nd, 21:44.27), Brooks Burcaw (90th, 22:49.12), Aidan Schindler (93rd, 23:01.67), Graycen Banaszak (109th, 24:09.78) and Jacob Carstens (110th, 24.09.79).
Owen Hamholm of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser finish first with a time of 17:28.52.
Keston Niven placed third (11:59.9) in the boys’ 3,200 m middle school race to lead the Elk Mound boys to a third-place finish with 110 points. Grady Westland (12:34.0) and Grayson Stunkel (12:46.8) also did well taking 11th and 12th, respectively. Elsie Carstens was the Mounders top finisher in the girls’ middle school race where she ran a 15:28.84 to place 32nd.
The Mounders run in Spring Valley this Thursday and at Amery next Tuesday, October 3.
