SPRING VALLEY — After another rough start to their volleyball season, Glenwood City was hoping that the start of conference contests last Thursday would offer an opportunity to get back on track and secure its first win of the year.
But, the Hilltoppers knew they had their collective hands full when they traveled to Spring Valley September 14 to begin the Dunn-St. Croix campaign.
A talented Cardinals squad, tabbed by many to be a championship contender in 2023, was more than ready for the visitors from Glenwood City.
Spring Valley never let Glenwood City find any kind of rhythm or momentum in the match and as a result the Hilltoppers lost in straight sets.
The Cardinals won 25-11. 25-8 and 25-11 to keep the Toppers without a win.
Avery Rubenzer and Allaina Johnson each tallied an ace serve for the Toppers. Izzy Davis had four kills in the match, Madison Caress registered three and Michaela Blaser had a pair.
Defensively, Alayna LaValley led the way with eight digs, Rubenzer added six, Jenna McCarthy had three and Opal Voeltz, Blaser and Johnson each contributed two.
The Toppers hosted Mondovi last evening and will participate in a triangular at Shell Lake on Thursday. They then play at Durand-Arkansaw next Tuesday, September 26.
