ELK MOUND — After breaking the goal line just once in its previous two football contests, the Elk Mound offense exploded for seven touchdowns on its home turf last Friday, September 8 as the Mounders whitewashed winless Osseo-Fairchild 47-0 in a Cloverbelt contest.
A 29-point, second-quarter scoring splurge lifted Elk Mound to victory as it snapped a two-game losing skid and evened its conference and overall season records at 1-1 and 2-2, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Thunder struggles this season continued to mount as they fell to 0-2 in conference play and 0-4 overall.
With 5:46 left in the first quarter of play, the Mounders snapped a scoreless deadlock with the Thunder when running back Parker Dutzle punctuated the end zone on a four-yard run. Kaden Russo’s PAT kick missed but Elk Mound led 6-0.
That advantage grew exponentially in the second stanza as Elk Mound struck pay dirt four times in that 12-minute period.
Logan Jerome connected with Sam Wenzel on a 16-yard pitch-and-catch at 9:32 to kick start the Mounders’ second-quarter scoring frenzy. Russo’s kick made it 13-0.
Less than four minutes later, Carter Vieth went into the end zone on a five-yard haul. Russo made good on the PAT kick and its was now 20-0 in favor of the Mounders with 5:44 still remaining until halftime.
But, Elk Mound was not finished. The Mounders put the pigskin into the end zone two more times before the first-half clock expired.
Jerome tossed his second and third touchdown passes of the quarter, hitting Kamron Diermeier with a 39-yard scoring strike at the 3:20 mark and collaborating with Wenzel for the pair’s second six-point score with 1:04 left until halftime. Jerome and Russo completed a pass for the two-point conversion on the earlier score and Russo booted the PAT following the latter TD to give the host Mounders a 35-0 lead at the intermission.
Elk Mound added a pair of scores in the second half – one in each quarter.
At 2:46 of the third quarter, Vieth gained his second rushing touchdown of the contest on a one-yard dive. Although the PAT kick sailed wide, the Mounders lead grew to 41-0.
A one-yard touchdown run by Brandon Lee with just 54 ticks left in the game accounted for the 47-0 final.
Elk Mound finished with 345 yards of offense which included 237 on the ground via 40 attempts. Parker Dutzle and Carter Vieth each carried 16 times for 109 and 89 yards, respectively. Dutzle had a touchdown and Vieth finished with a pair of scores. Brandon Lee added 39 yards and a score on eight attempts. Logan Jerome finished 6-11 for 108 yards and three touchdown passes. Kamron Diermeier snared two catches for 73 yards and a TD. Both of Sam Wenzel’s receptions went for touchdowns as he finished the evening with 29 yards.
Elk Mound travels to the conference’s other winless squad, Durand-Arkansaw, this Friday, September 15. The Panthers were shut out by Regis, 37-0, last week.
