The first week of the 2023 volleyball season was a busy one for the Elk Mound squad.
The Mounders played seven different teams in a pair of tournaments finishing 2-5.
Elk Mound got the new season underway last Tuesday, August 22 in Barron where it lost a pair of matches in straight sets. The Mounders fell to host Barron 25-9 and 25-13 and were also quickly dispatched by Eau Claire Regis by scores of 25-15 and 25-8.
With a few more days of practice the Mounder girls headed to Menomonie on Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26 for the annual UW-Stout Volleyball Sprawl where they finished 2-3.
In its only match Friday at the Sprawl, Elk Mound lost 2-0 to Mosinee by scores of 25-10 and 25-23.
The Mounders had a busy second and final day at the sprawl playing in four matches, winning two and losing two.
In its opening match Saturday, Elk Mound downed Luck 2-1. Luck took the opening set 25-17 but Elk Mound rebounded to win the final two sets and match 25-23 and 15-11.
Big Rivers’ member Eau Claire North was next on the Mounders’ Saturday docket. The Huskies prevailed in a pair of close sets 25-18 and 26-24.
In the Mounders third Saturday match, they took on Merrill. The Bluejays dominated play as they earned a 25-13 and 25-10 sweep over the Mounders.
In its fourth and final match of the day and Sprawl, Elk Mound defeated Stanley-Boyd two sets to none. The Mounders won a very close first game 26-24 over the Orioles before earning the clean sweep with a 25-13 win in the second set.
The Mounders hosted a quad yesterday (Tuesday, August 29) and will then get a few days of well-deserved rest before resuming play next Tuesday, September 5 with a non-conference match at Stanley-Boyd.
