ELK MOUND — The Elk Mound softball squad suffered its second consecutive Dunn-St. Croix loss when it fell to league champion Mondovi 2-1 in its conference and regular season finale last Monday, May 15.
Locked in a scoreless contest through five innings, Mondovi finally broke the stalemate with a run in the top of the sixth only to have Elk Mound knot it once more with a run in the bottom half of the frame.
The Lady Buffaloes came up with what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh and held the Mounders scoreless in their final at bat to claim the 2-1 win.
With that win, Mondovi swept the season series from last year’s conference champions and finished a perfect 14-0 in Dunn-St. Croix play to claim the 2023 championship.
Elk Mound finished 11-3 in league games, good for second place, and head into the playoffs with a 13-6 record.
Elk Mound finished with just four hits against Mondovi hurler Morghan Ashwell. Sophomore Ellie Schiszik picked up two of those hits. Alexa Severson and Elisabeth Beskow each singled for the Mounders other two hits in the game. Chloe Dummer drove in Elk Mound’s only run.
Hailey Meyer threw all seven innings inside the pitching circle. She took the loss despite surrendering only two runs on six hits, while striking out a dozen and walking only three.
The Lady Mounders, who had an opening-round bye in the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament, hosted Durand-Arkansaw in a semifinal contest yesterday (Tuesday, May 23). A win will put the Mounders in Thursday’s regional championship.
Elk Mound swept both regular-season games against Durand-Arkansaw, winning 4-2 and 4-1.
