The April weather finally cooperated allowing the Glenwood City softball team to get in a pair of Dunn-St. Croix Conference games last week.
The week did not get off to a great start for the Hilltoppers as they were bombed 17-7 at home last Monday, April 24 by the Colfax Vikings. Three days later, Glenwood City came up with its second conference win as it nipped Elmwood-Plum City 6-5 in Elmwood April 27 to earn the regular-season sweep of the Wolves.
Glenwood City is now 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play.
The Hilltoppers hosted a doubleheader with Durand-Arkansaw Monday, May 1. Mondovi came to Glenwood City the following day. Glenwood City will go to Spring Valley this Friday with Elk Mound coming to town next Monday, May 8.
Colfax
Colfax freshman Brynn Sikora was a thorn in the Hilltoppers’ side last Monday, blasting a home run and a double, accounting for seven RBIs as the Vikings left Glenwood City with a 17-7 win in six innings.
The game was knotted 2-2 after the first inning before Colfax added six runs in the second inning and with two more in the third they led 10-2.
The Hilltoppers scratched a run across in the bottom of the third but the Vikings continued to score, picking up four in the fourth to up their advantage to 14-3.
Glenwood City kept the game going by scoring a pair of runs in their half of the fifth but Colfax added three more runs in the sixth. The Toppers again brought a couple of runners home but the Vikings held them to those two runs and the game ended with the ten-run rule.
The team combined for 27 hits, 14 by Colfax and 13 off Glenwood City bats.
Topper junior Sydney Grant batted 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Brooklyn Brite, Madison Caress and Michaela Blaser each added a pair of hits and two RBIs. One of Caress’ knocks went for a double. Libby Wagner, Jenna McCarthy, Isabel Davis and Avery Rubenzer each had a hit for Glenwood City.
Maddy Klatt surrendered eight hits and 10 runs with two strikeouts and four free passes in three innings to take the pitching loss. Jenna McCarthy came on in the fourth and threw the final three innings allowing seven runs on six hits, issuing three walks and striking out one.

Elmwood-Plum City
Glenwood City scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to beat the EPC Wolves 6-5 in Elmwood last Thursday, April 27.
The victory gave the Hilltoppers a sweep of the regular season series. Both of Glenwood City’s conference wins this season have come against Elmwood-Plum City.
The Wolves took an early 1-0 lead with a score in the first inning. The teams exchanged a pair of runs in the second inning with the Toppers getting the equalizer in the top of the third to make it three all.
