EM triumphs over Mondovi in baseball battle for first place

MONDOVI — In a first-place conference showdown, the Elk Mound baseball team rallied from an early three-run deficit to defeat Mondovi Buffaloes 7-5 on the Buffaloes’ home field last Friday, April 21. The game, which had been scheduled for the previous day, had to be postponed 24 hours due to rain and snow.
Both squads entered the contest unbeaten in Dunn-St. Croix action but six runs, scored over the third, fourth and fifth innings, allowed Elk Mound to pull out the two-run victory over its host.
The Mounders improved to 4-0 in conference play and 4-1 overall while the Buffaloes fell to 4-1 in the D-SC standings and 5-3 in all games.
Both teams put a run on the scoreboard in the first frame.
After holding the Mounders scoreless in the top of the second, the host Buffaloes plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 advantage.
Elk Mound knotted the game in the top of third when Jerome Delikowski belted a three-run homer only to have Mondovi answer with a single score in the bottom half of the frame to retake the lead at 5-4.
The Mounders scored the equalizer in the top of the fourth and then grabbed their first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to go up 7-5.
Neither team was able to push another run across home plate as Elk Mound held on for the two-score victory and take sole possession of first place.
Ryan Bartig had two of the Mounders six hits, scored a pair of runs and walked twice. Jerome Delikowski, who had the big-three-run homer in the third, finished with a trio of RBIs. Lucas Johnson belted a double for his only hit and Carter Vieth and Victor Noller each had a single to account for the Mounders final two base hits.
Kamron Diermeier started on the mound and threw five inning surrendering all five Mounder runs on six hits, which included a home run, to earn the win. He struck out five and walked three. Lucas Johnson threw the final two innings allowing only one hit and no runs and finished with a pair of Ks.
Mondovi’s Porter Bauer suffered the pitching loss giving up five runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a trio of walks in three and a third innings of work. Hunter Sandberg threw three and a third frames for the Buffaloes and surrendered two runs on two hits and finished with two Ks and three walks. Andrew Rud led the Buffs’ offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate that included a home run and a double for three RBIs. Like Elk Mound Mondovi finished with six hits.
