The defending conference champion Elk Mound softball team started its title defense by sweeping a trio of Dunn-St. Croix foes in the opening week of action.
Although, the Lady Mounders had to wait a few extra weeks to take the softball diamond due to inclement weather, it was well worth it.
Elk Mound opened its 2023 campaign with a five-inning, 14-1 home victory over Spring Valley last Monday, April 10. A day later, the Mounders traveled to Boyceville and defeated the Bulldogs 6-2. Returning home to host the Hilltoppers on Friday, April 14, Elk Mound beat Glenwood City 6-1.
The Mounders, (3-0 overall and in conference play) were slated to play in Colfax Monday but the game had to be rescheduled for May 12 due to the snow and sleet that fell Sunday and into Monday. They have conference games in Mondovi this Thursday and at Spring Valley next Monday, April 24.
Spring Valley
Mounder Hailey Meyer gave a strong performance in her pitching debut at home against Spring Valley April 10.
Meyer struck out ten Cardinal batters and did not allow a hit in Elk Mound’s 14-1, five-inning victory in the Dunn-St. Croix and season opener. Meyer allowed just one earned run and a walk.
Meanwhile, Elk Mound made the most of the eight hits and ten walks Spring Valley pitchers issued as it crossed home plate 14 times.
Elisabeth Beskow and Chloe Dummer each went 2-for-4 at the plate while Meyer helped her own cause picking up a pair of hits including a two-RBI triple and scored a trio of runs in three plate appearances to account for three-quarters of the Mounders’ hits. Beskow also had a pair of RBIs to lead the team.
Lauren Garnett added a trio of runs too and a hit in her three trips to the plate and Ellie Schiszik went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Valley’s Maddie Shafer suffered the loss in the throwing circle as she gave up ten runs on six hits, walking eight while striking out seven. Megan Harvey allowed the other four Mounder runs on two hits and a pair of walks and did not record an out.
Spring Valley had five errors in the contest, Elk Mound didn’t have any.

Boyceville
A pair of three-run innings staked Elk Mound to a 6-0 lead that it held for much of its conference game in Boyceville Tuesday, April 11.
The Mounders took a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first and doubled it with three more in the fourth.
The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the seventh when Boyceville finally broke through for a pair of scores but it was much too little and much too late as Elk Mound held on for the 6-2 win
Mounder hurler Hailey Meyer had another strong effort in the throwing circle, allowing Boyceville just a single hit and two runs, striking out seven and walking three in seven innings of work.
Meyer’s was backed up by a good offensive performance that saw the Mounders collect nine hits. Elisabeth Beskow led the way with three hits, an RBI and a run scored in four at bats. Lauren Garnett’s lone hit was a double and accounted for the Mounders only extra base rap. Ellie Schiszik scored twice and had a pair of RBIs to lead the squad.
Ali McRoberts pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs but took the loss after giving up six runs on as many hits. She walked one batter and struck out a pair.
Boyceville had three errors and Elk Mound finished with two.
Glenwood City
Elk Mound took advantage of some shaky pitching and walks by Glenwood City early in their Friday, April 14 D-SC game played on the Mounders’ field to grab a quick lead.
Despite just one hit, Elk Mound was able to score three runs in the opening inning when Glenwood City starting pitcher Maddie Klatt suffered some early control issues hitting one Mounder batter before walking three straight.
While Klatt eventually settled in, her Elk Mound counterpart, Hailey Meyer, was zeroed in from the start, allowing just one run on three hits while registering ten strikeouts and only two walks to earn her third straight win, a 6-1 triumph, in as many starts.
Elk Mound carried that early 3-0 lead into the sixth inning when Glenwood City scored its only run of the game when Libby Wagner drew a lead-off walk and came around to score to make it 3-1.
The Mounders responded with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Jaidynn Sarauer and Ellie Schiszik led off with singles, Elisabeth Beskow reached on a single that scored Sarauer. Hailey Meyer then rapped a two-RBI triple to plate Schiszik and Beskow for the 6-1 advantage.
The Toppers tried to rally in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs but Meyer was able to get the Toppers’ Libby Wagner to pop out to her for the final out.
Meyer also led the Mounders at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and those two RBIs. Schiszik went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
