APPLETON — The Elk Mound powerlifting program continues to accumulate accolades and trophies.
The Mounders recently returned from the 2023 Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association’s (WHSPA) state meet, which was held March 4th and 5th in Appleton, with a pair of state championships in tow.
The Elk Mound girls team won this year’s Division 2 Girls’ Raw state championship while the boys’ squad finished in fifth place. Adding the teams’ scores together, allowed the Mounders to also claim the 2023 Division 2 combined girls’/boys’ Raw state title.
In powerlifting, individuals and teams can compete in one of two categories – Raw and Equipped. Raw lifting uses no equipment except a back belt. Equipped powerlifting allows all different sorts of equipment including, bench shirts, knee/wrist wraps, squat and deadlift suits.
Elk Mound competes exclusively in the Raw category for both girls and boys.
Team scores are based on individual results. First-place finishes are worth 12 team points, second place receives nine points all the way down to tenth place which is worth one point. Teams are allowed to take their best two finishes in each weight class up to a maximum of ten lifters. A perfect team score is 120 points (ten, first-place finishes).
Lifters top weights in the squat, bench press and deadlift are tallied together for the individual’s final score. Each competitor is allowed three lifts attempts in each of the three categories.
At this year’s state meet, Elk Mound had four of its 22 powerlifters qualify for the awards podium which recognizes the top five place winners in each weight class.
Senior Teagan Pahl, who copped a national title last year, added a state championship to her resume during the WHSPA state meet in Appleton. Pahl finished first in Division 2’s 110-kilos or 242-pound weight class. She lifted 157.5 pounds in the squat, 65 pounds in the bench press and set a new state record in the deadlift with a lift of 190 pounds to finish with a winning total of 412.5 pounds.
