GLENWOOD CITY — A year ago, Glenwood City finished with a perfect 4-0 record in Dunn-St. Croix competitions to capture its first conference wrestling championship in a dozen years.
But unlike last year when the Hilltoppers won a tiebreaker against rival Boyceville to eventually earn that coveted title, Glenwood City demonstrated compete mastery over its fellow conference foes this season.
A Dunn-St. Croix dual wrestling season that the Hilltoppers capped with a pair of dominating home performances last week. Wrestling its final two conference duals in a span of three days, Glenwood City easily dispatched Mondovi/Eleva-Strum 72-11 in a Tuesday, January 24 make-up held in the elementary gym and then delivered the Coup de grâce two nights later, Thursday, January 26, in front of a large and enthusiastic Parents’ Night crowd with a nearly identical 72-12 trashing of Spring Valley/Elmwood to finish 4-0 once again and earn back-to-back Dunn-St. Croix conference wrestling championships.
“One of our goals this year as a team was to win the conference championship,” stated Glenwood City head coach Shane Strong, who along with assistant coach Tim Miller won their 150th career dual earlier in the month. “We are proud of that accomplishment.”
“Our program is very important to our wrestling circle. We have a group of community members that support us throughout the season,” he added.
“We take pride in giving our best effort in the practice room and in competition. We are thankful for the opportunity to compete and we feel fortunate that we can call ourselves conference champions this year,” concluded Strong.

Glenwood City capped its regular season the following day, Friday, January 27, when it competed in the annual Whitetail Shootout at Menomonie High School. The Hilltoppers went 2-2 in the 12-team, dual-style tournament and finished fourth. State-ranked wrestlers Landon Obermueller (6th at 106), Wyatt Unser (2nd at 113), Ian Radintz (2nd at 126) and Gabe Knops (8th at 138) finished unbeaten in their four matches at the Shootout.
But, the Hilltoppers (13-7) have bigger goals ahead according to Coach Strong beginning with the Divsion 3 super regional which will be held in Edgar on Saturday, February 11.
This new format combines two former regionals into one super regional that consists of approximately 13 teams. In the old regional format, only the top two finishers in each weight class advanced to the individual sectional while the first-place team moved on to the team sectional. Under the new system, the top four place winners in each weight bracket will move on to the sectional meet, also to be held in Edgar, with the first and second-place teams advancing to the team sectional.
Mondovi/Eleva-Strum
It may have taken a few extra days but the wait was well worth it.
After inclement weather delayed their original competition scheduled for the previous Thursday, Glenwood City was able to welcome Mondovi/Eleva-Strum for a Dunn-St. Croix wrestling dual last Tuesday, January 24. With the Topper girls’ basketball team already scheduled for a game in the high school gym, the dual was moved to the elementary gym.
The Buffaloes won the first and last match of the dual but the Hilltoppers dominated the rest, winning 12 consecutive matches – seven by pin falls and another five via forfeits – to claim a convincing 72-11 victory.
The dual begin at 170 pounds where Mondovi/Eleva-Strum’s Alan George scored a 21-2 technical fall over Will Standaert of Glenwood City. That win gave the Buffaloes a 5-0 lead.
It would the visitors only advantage of the evening as the Hilltoppers rattled off a dozen straight wins in amassing 72 points.
Toppers’ junior Steve Booth provided a spark when he overcame a deficit and pinned Ethan Odegard at 182 pounds.
From there, Glenwood City rolled over Mondovi/Eleva-Strum as Jackson Logghe (195), Blake Fayerweather (285), Landon Obermueller (106), James Knight (120), Ian Radintz (138) and Mitchell McGee (152) all registered pins. In addition, Connor Gross (220), Jake Wood (113), Logan McVeigh (126), Zeb Holden (132) and Gabe Knops (145) were awarded forfeits.
In the final match of the dual, Noah Brite lost to the Buff’s Cody Wagner via a fall, making the final score 72-11.

Spring Valley/Elmwood
Much like it had two days prior against Mondovi/Eleva-Strum, Glenwood City dominated its January 26 Dunn-St. Croix dual finale against visiting Spring Valley/Elmwood.
Celebrating Parents’ Night, the Hilltoppers won the dual’s first 11 matches, seven by fall, and 12 in total as it routed the Cardinals 72-12 last Thursday.
GC junior Connor Gross got the dual underway at 220 pounds where he won on an injury default when Spring Valley’s Jack Steinmeyer was unable to continue.
Over the next ten matches, Blake Fayerweather (285), Wyatt Unser (120), James Knight (126), Gabe Knops (145), Mitchell McGee (152) and Noah Brite (160) collected pins to put Glenwood City in front 66-0.
Spring Valley/Elmwood finally got on the board as Cole Steinmeyer and Keegan Merth scored pins at 170 and 182 pounds, respectively, to give the Cardinals their only wins of the dual.
Jackson Logghe capped the varsity dual by sticking Cardinal wrestler Tyler Vanesse in the 195-pound bout to make the final tally 72-12.
“We were pleased with the level of focus and effort our kids demonstrated this week with the rescheduled dual and managing our weight,” said Strong.
“We face different challenges than any other sports that can impact your performance. I thought the kids handled the adversity well and responded on the mat. Our upper weights wrestled much better this week, you love to see those kids developing throughout the year,” he concluded.

Whitetail Shootout
Like it had in its two conference performances earlier in the week, Glenwood City dominated its first two duals in last Friday’s Whitetail Shootout in Menomonie beating Chippewa Falls McDonell Central, which had just two wrestlers, by a perfect 84-0 score and Tomahawk 71-12.
With those two wins, the Hilltoppers, who are ranked eighth in Division 3, advanced to the semifinals where they tangled with Baldwin-Woodville, polling sixth in Division 2. After losing to the Blackhawks 57-18 early this season, the Hilltoppers gave a much better accounting of themselves this time around but still lost 46-27. Glenwood City got as close as 32-24 but Baldwin-Woodville pulled away with wins in three of the final four matches.
Connor Gross (220), Landon Obermueller (106), Wyatt Unser (113) and Ian Radintz (126) all had pins in the B-W dual which accounted for 24 of the team’s 27 points.
In the third-place dual, Glenwood City nearly pulled off the upset against Division 1 Wausau West. After falling behind 28-0, the Hilltoppers rallied for six straight wins, from 106 to 138 pounds, to go ahead 32-28. During that winning streak, the Toppers got pins from Landon Obermueller (106), James Knight (120), Ian Radintz (126) and Gabe Knops (138) along with major decisions by Wyatt Unser (113) and Zeb Holden (132). But Wausau West scored pins in two of the final three bouts to rally for a 40-35 win. Sandwiched between those final two falls by Wausau West was 5-2 win by Andrew Blaser at 152 pounds.
