The Elk Mound girls’ basketball team won a pair of close non-conference contests to open the 2022-23 hardwood campaign.
The Lady Mounder pulled out a 48-45 overtime win at Prescott last Tuesday, November 15 to tip off the new season then two days later they nipped Fall Creek at home by a 41-39 count.
Elk Mound (2-0) will have two more non-conference tilts against squads from the Cloverbelt and Middle Border this coming week. They hosted Eau Claire Regis last evening (Tuesday, November 22) and then following a short Thanksgiving break will hit the road next Monday, November 28 to play Baldwin-Woodville.
Prescott
Five, first-half three point baskets, a pair by Brooke Emery and Ellie Schiszik and another from Tori Blaskowski, helped Elk Mound build a 29-22 halftime advantage over their host, the Cardinals of Prescott, in the November 15 season opener for both squads.
Prescott was able to clap down on the Mounders’ long range shooting in the second half while enjoying its own success from behind the three-point arc, nailing five of its own triples in the latter half to outscore Elk Mound 22-15 and knot the game at 44 all at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, neither team was able to make a basket but the Mounders connected on all four of their foul shots – Blaskowski and Chloe Dummer hit both of their charity tosses, while the Cardinals went just one-for-two, as Elk Mound pulled out the 48-45 victory.
“It was a hard fought win for us in OT,” said Mounders’ head coach Jordan Kongshaug. “I appreciated our kids’ effort and ability to overcome some adversity throughout the game.”
Blaskowski, Schiszik and Emery all finished in double digits for Elk Mound. Blaskowski tallied 13 points, Emery had a dozen and Schiszik finished with 11 including three triples.
6’ 2” junior Lila Posthuma led Prescott with 18 points off five field goals including three treys and a 5-of-6 performance at the free throw line. Freshman Violet Otto and senior Katrina Budworth added ten points each for the Cardinals.
Fall Creek
Elk Mound welcomed Fall Creek last Thursday, November 17 for its season home opener.
The first-half was a low scoring affair with the Mounders holding the Crickets to a pair of two-point hoops while sinking seven hoops of their own including a trio of three-point shots. But Fall Creek was able to stay within six points at halftime, 19-13, thanks to a 9-for-10 performance from the charity stripe.
Fall Creek’s offense heated up in the second half as it outscored the host Mounders 26-22.
Elk Mound, however, was able to hold off the Cricket rally just enough to win by two points, 41-39.
Brooke Emery, who had just a three-point hoop in the first half, sank three in the second half to lead the Mounders to victory with 12 points. Ellie Schiszik finished with 11 points and Stella Rhude chipped in with six in the final half to finish with eight points.
Tori Marten and Jenna Anders led Fall Creek with 10 points each.
“It was good to get a win. The game was hard fought, and we will keep working to get better as the season progresses,” stated Coach Kongshaug.
