Mounders stampeded by Mondovi Buffaloes

ELK MOUND — The Mounders had a tough assignment for their final home game of the 2022 football season – the Buffaloes of Mondovi.
Mondovi, who entered Friday’s game in Elk Mound ranked eighth in most recent Division 6 state poll, was coming off its first loss of the season, a 37-14 trashing at the hands of Division 7’s top ranked squad, the Ramblers of Eau Claire Regis, the previous week.
The Buffaloes stampeded the Mounders with 254 yards rushing and six touchdowns which included 147 yards and two scores by Dawson Rud to earn a 37-6 win in the October 7 Cloverbelt Conference contest.
In all, Mondovi, who sits in second place with a 5-1 and is 7-1 overall, finished with 307 yards of offense. Meanwhile, Elk Mound accumulated just 159 yards with 105 of that total coming on the ground as it lost for the third straight week and heads in to its final game of the season at Stanley-Boyd this Friday with a 1-5 mark (seventh place) in conference action and 1-7 overall.
Elk Mound trailed just 8-0 after the first quarter. Mondovi quarterback Jarod Falkner scored on a 15-yard run at 6:47 and Dawson Rud tossed the two-point conversion pass to Austin Remington for the early advantage.
The Buffaloes would extend their lead in the second quarter with touchdown runs by Falkner and Rud.
A second touchdown run by the Mondovi signal caller, this one from 30 yards out, coupled with Rud’s run for two upped the visitor’s lead to 16-0 at 10:57.
Rud then added the first of his two rushing touchdowns with a 7-yard jaunt at 4:57. Cody Wagner added the PAT to give Mondovi a 23-0 advantage entering halftime.
Rud and the Buffaloes added to that lead when he scored on a 15-yard sprint to the end zone at 7:26 of the third quarter. Wagner booted the extra points to make it 30-0.
Elk Mound would finally find the end zone with 7:57 left in the game when Kaden Russo broke off a 36-yard run that hit pay dirt. A try for two points came up empty when the pass fell incomplete leaving the score at 30-6.
Mondovi, however, was not finished putting the football in the end zone. Peyton Synder ran 17 yards for the Buffaloes final touchdown with 5:04 remaining in the game. Wagner’s third PAT of the evening provided the final point in a 37-6 Buffalo victory.
Kaden Russo led the Mounders’ offensive unit with 89 yards rushing and its only touchdown on 14 carries and added another 49 yards through the air on a 6-for-10 passing performance with an interception. Parker Dutzle added 29 yards on a half dozen rushes and Carter Vieth finished with seven runs for just 14 yards.
With Rud’s two-touchdown and 147-yard rushing performance leading Mondovi, Falkner added 53 yards and a pair of scores on eight carries while Synder added another 50 yards and a score on just five hauls. Falkner finished 9-for-18 passing for 53 yards.
