BLACK RIVER FALLS — In their final tune-up prior to this Thursday’s Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship at Whitetail Golf Course, the Elk Mound cross country squads raced in the Black River Falls Invitational last Tuesday, October 4.
The Mounder boys behind a top-ten finish by senior Ian Hazen captured third place out of a dozen complete squads while the girls finished last among the nine schools that fielded complete teams. 130 runners competed in the boys’ race while 89 girls ran.
The competition not only served as the Mounder runners final opportunity to compete before the conference meet but a chance to familiarize themselves with the course at Skyline Golf which will host the WIAA Division 2 sectional meet on Saturday, October 22.
Elk Mound had a trio of senior boys finish among the top 20.
Ian Hazen was the first of that triumvirate to cross the finish line taking seventh place in a time of 17:40. Classmates Aiden Schiferl, who did not run in the Colfax Invite at Whitetail the previous Saturday, and Trae Schaefer placed 15th and 20th, respectively. Schiferl ran a 18:04.7 and Schaefer completed his run in 18:30.7.
Junior Bodie Folczyk finished 34th in a time of 19:26.3 and another senior, Lucas Hanson, ran a 19:54.2 to place 43rd to complete the boys’ team scoring.
Seven other Mounders also ran in the boys’ race.
Senior Tobey Westcott and junior Cooper Reese finished 53rd and 54th, respectively, with times of 20:18.8 and 20:24. Junior Jesse Moyer crossed the finish in 20:33.3 to take 58th, freshman Brody Niven ran a 20:46.2 to finish 62nd with junior Evan Lauer coming in next to take 63rd in 20:50.1, freshman Grady Larson placed 79th in 21:31.9 and freshman Dalton Banaszak ran a 25:27.9 to finish in 120th place.
The Mounders finished with a score of 111, a distant third to the winning team from West Salem, who scored a 52 points, and runner-up Mauston who had a 56. Eli Boppart of Mauston was the boys’ top individual finisher with a time of 16:28.5.
Sophomore Ellie Schiszik was the first to finish for the Elk Mound girls. Schiszik ran a 23:17.9 to place 23rd. Junior Marley King was the Mounders next runner across the line as she finished 34th in 24:14.5. Senior Aleya Hadenfeldt was the ladies third finisher as she took 56th in 26:34.0. Junior Carly Mohr and sophomore Kylee Anderson completed the scoring for the team with Mohr taking 78th in 29:50.2 and Anderson was 80th with a time of 29:54.9. Junior Addison Young was the final finisher for the girls, taking 82nd in 30:53.8.
As a team, the Elk Mound girls scored a 191 to take ninth. Medford won the team title with a 33 just two points less than second-place West Salem. Loyal’s Addison Holm won the girls’ race with a time of 25:35.9.
The conference meet will be held this Thursday, October 13 at Whitetail Golf Course with racing set to begin at 4 p.m.
