Mounder football shuts out O-F Thunder for first win

OSSEO — Elk Mound and Osseo-Fairchild – two programs with rich football histories – entered last Friday’s contest against one another without a win between them.
Something had to give. And it would be the Thunder defense!
Elk Mound’s offense ran rough shod over its host piling up 299 yards on the ground to capture its first Cloverbelt and season win with a 15-0 shut out September 16 at Osseo-Fairchild’s Ward Field.
A pair of Elk Mound runners, junior Carter Vieth and sophomore Parker Dutzle, eclipsed the 100-yard mark to lead the Mounders. Vieth led the way rushing 30 times for 176 yards and the team’s first touchdown while Dutzle tacked on 102 yards on 19 attempts as the Mounders improved to 1-2 in Cloverbelt play and 1-4 overall.
Kaden Russo added 23 rushing yards on seven hauls, one of which went for the Mounders second and final score.
The first quarter of play passed without a score.
And it looked like the first half might also end in a scoreless tie but Elk Mound mounted a late drive capped by Vieth’s five-yard scoring run with just nine seconds remaining in the opening half. Quarterback Logan Jerome connected with Sam Wenzel on the two-point conversion pass to send the Mounders to halftime with a 8-0 advantage.
Elk Mound put an insurance score on the board just passed the midway point of the third quarter when Russo broke the goal line on a four-yard run at the 5:39 mark. Russo then booted the PAT kick to give Elk Mound a 15-0 lead.
That is how the game ended as neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Jerome finished 3-for-4 passing for just 12 yards and had an interception.
Defensively, the Mounders finished with four sacks, one each by Russo, Vieth, Wenzel and Isaac Hay. Ian Gerritis had an interception.
Elk Mound returns home this Friday to face Durand-Arkansaw (3-2) in the annual homecoming game.
