EM cruises past Colfax, wins D-SC baseball title

For the second time in seven days, the Elk Mound baseball team defeated Colfax, this time in Elk Mound May 23 by a 10-0 score allowing them to claim the Dunn-St. Croix Championship.
The Mounders then made sure to finish two games ahead of Boyceville by winning an extra-innings road game against Mondovi by a score of 7-3 the next day, May 24, giving them a conference record of 13-1 and 14-2 overall.
Colfax vs. Elk Mound
Kaden Russo took control of the game from the pitcher’s mound, giving up just one hit while whiffing ten Vikings and not issuing any free passes.
Meanwhile, the Mounder batters were knocking the ball all over the field, scoring a single run in the first, two in the second, another one in the fourth, then broke it open with six in the bottom of the fifth to end the game in five innings.
Lucas Johnson and Avery Kaanta had a big night at the plate, both batting 2-for-3 with Johnson slamming a double with an RBI and three runs scored, while Kaanta had a trio of RBIs and came home once. Russo had a hit with an RBI, Kamron Diermeier also had a hit and crossed the plate twice while Ethan Johnson collected one hit with a pair of RBIs.
Jamison Flatland had the only hit for the Vikings and although he gave up just one hit and one walk for a single run, he was labeled with the loss. Mitch Medin tossed an inning giving up two earned runs on a pair of hits with a K while Ashton Greenwell threw two and two-thirds innings for Colfax surrendering eight hits for seven earned runs with three free passes and two strikeouts.
Elk Mound vs. Mondovi
It was a scoreless game until the top of the sixth when the Mounders finally broke through for three runs. The way the Elk Mound pitchers were throwing, it appeared that would be enough, but the Buffaloes came up with their own big inning, knotting the score in the bottom of the seventh.
The Mounders needed to use a third pitcher as they headed into extra innings, and it turned out Kamron Diermeier would have to stay on the mound for five innings before Elk Mound came up with four runs in the 12th frame, then held the Buffaloes off in the bottom of the inning for the 7-3 win.
Kaanta picked up two RBIs, scored two runs and had one hit to help the Mounders while Carter Vieth and Jerome Delikowski both had a hit and an RBI. Lucas Johnson batted 2-for-5 and scored twice and Ryan Bartig was also 2-for-5 and crossed home plate once.
Kaden Russo and Avery Kaanta both spent time on the pitcher’s mound while Diermeier was credited with the win, going five innings, allowing three hits but no runs with five strikeouts and one walk. Russo started and allowed just two hits and no runs in two innings of work. Kaanta went the next five frames giving up three hits and those three seventh-innings runs that allowed the Buffaloes to take the contest to extra innings. He had five strikeouts to his credit with a walk.
The Mounders struggled in the field, committing seven errors but the Buffaloes also had their share of errors with six.
