JJ Williams breaks another school record; Topper trackster compete in Amery and Durand

Less than a week after eclipsing a three and a half decade old school record in the 1,600 meter run, Glenwood City junior JJ Williams did it again – this time in the 3,200 meters.
Running at the Amery Invitational last Tuesday, May 3, Williams bested the school’s 3,200 meter record by nearly nine seconds taking first in a time of 9:50.92. Donan Wink set the previous mark of 9:59 during the 1986 sectional meet under then head coach Fred Booth.
Ironically, the 1,600 meter record that Williams broke at the Hale Distance Night in West Allis on April 29 also was set in 1986 by Ron Johnson. 36 years later, Williams has put his name behind a pair of Glenwood City High School distance running records.
Williams’ record-break win highlighted Glenwood City’s participation in the Amery Invite where the boys’ team finished second in the small schools’ competition behind Grantsburg. The Toppers boys scored 105 points. The Pirates dominated with 204 points.
The Glenwood City girls also finished well in Amery, placing third in the small schools’ standings with 105.5 points behind winner Prairie Farm (145) and runner-up Turtle Lake/Clayton (126).
With fairly clear skies and warm temperatures all week, the Hilltopper thinclads also competed in Durand last Friday, May 6. Both squads finished third in the ten-team invitational with the girls tallying 96 points and the boys 94.
Baldwin-Woodville and Mondovi tied for the ladies team title after each finished with 129.5 points. Mondovi also topped the boys competiton with 121 point with Spring Valley taking second with 98 points just ahead of Glenwood City.
Amery Invite
JJ Williams record-setting effort in the 3,200 meters wasn’t the Hilltoppers only victory in Amery last Tuesday.
Senior Brenna Schwartz won both the triple jump and 200 meter dash and finished third in the pole vault.
Fellow senior Bella Simmons captured gold in the 1,600 meter run and was second in the 300 meter low hurdles.
Junior Brady Klatt scored the boys’ other first-place medal with a win in the discus. He also placed second in the long jump.
Senior Austin Nelson finished second in the 200 meter dash and third in the 400 meters. Junior Nick Hierlmeier also garnered a second in the shot put and third in the discus.
Junior Aria DeSmith copped a silver-finish in the shot put.
The boys’ 4x100m and 4x400m along with the girls’ 4x400m relays all finished second.
Bronze finishes went to the boys’ 4x800m relay, sophomore Haylie Hannah in the 100m high hurdles and junior Blake Wakeling in the pole vault.
Durand Invite
Brady Klatt was a double winner in Durand last Friday, May 6 as he took first in both the long jump and discus throw to help the Glenwood City boys’ finish third overall.
The boys’ 4x800m relay team of Elek and Ilan Anderson, Connor Berends and Anthony Nelson claimed gold.
Austin Nelson took second in the 800 meter run while thirds were garnered by Blake Wakeling in the high jump and pole vault, Nick Hierlmeier in the shot put, Connor Berends in the 1,600m, and the 4x100m relay squad.
On the girls’ side, senior Bella Simmons won the 300m low hurdles and placed second in the 1,600m run.
Brenna Schwartz, another senior, took top honors in the triple jump and was the runner-up in the 200 meter dash.
Sophomore Haylie Hannah took third in the 100m high hurdles and high jump and placed fourth in the 100 meter dash.
Finally the girls’ 4x100m and 4x200m relays placed third.
